RAHAL BRINGS RACING TO CITY
Windsor Star - Friday March 28th By Star writer Dave Waddell

The city that helped put Canada on wheels is going to celebrate its connection with the Auto industry by holding a kart race through Windsor's streets as part of the 45th International Freedom festival this June.

The inaugural Dodge Freedom GP of Windsor, part of the nine race ChampCar Stars of Tomorrow circuit, will be held june 27-29. The 125cc and 100cc karts are capable of speeds in excess of 160 kph.

"This is exactly the kind of event we've been looking for," said bobby Rahal, who co-owns the race series.

"Its a major metropolitan area. It'll be a scenic course and it's attached to a major municipal event. The potential awareness for karting is unlimited here."

the Stars series is a developmental circuit for young drivers, mostly aged 16 to24, with races from coast to coast, in North America. The windsor race will be the second Canadian stop this season and is being considered as a special event this season due to its late addition to the sched.

The 1.6 km course, the longest for the Stars, will start in front of Casino windsor and head down festival Plaza along Aylmer. After looping on the plaza, the cars will head back up glengarry to Riverside drive.

"The names might not be recognizable now, but the exciting thing is, potentially they will be." Rahal said.

"Every Canadian driver on the CART or IRL circuits, guys like PT, Tag, and Carp, all came out of Canadian kart racing."

Rahal is particularly excitied because the Windsor event has the potential to become a crown jewel for the Stars circuit. With no admission charge, organizers are expecting 10-15000 fans to turn out.

"It'll be the best attended kart race in North America." said Rahal, who co-owns Team Rahal on the CART, IRL, and Toyota Atlantic circuits with TV star David Letterman. Freedom Festival organizer, Tom Ondrejicka, who came up with the idea for the race, siad the course layout allows for excellent sight lines for fans.

"We'll have various granstands and there's a natural grassy setting for fans as well," Tom said.

"It'll be set up so fans will be able to mingle with the drivers. This meets our needs of adding more family friendly events while being a perfect fit with the interest in Automobiles in this town."

Cool. 1.6 km track? That's gotta be like the old Spa course to these guys. Give us a reminder when this thing actually comes up, dm... might be a good reason to head north!

Sounds like a job for Twisty and Devil.
I'd better book some time off. Don't think phoning in sick and hanging out across the street from where I work would be a good idea. I'll try to take a picture of the future course from the roof of the casino and post it.

I've already got a few probables for coming to this weekend. Its on an off CART week....June 27-29th (scrunched between portland and cleveland)

If the desire is there, we'll have a full blown get-together.... Not only is the racing here, but the International Freedom Festival is on... if you can come a few days early, the date for the fireworks has been set at June 25th(wednesday). The fireworks, a three barge 35 minute fireworks show set to music(bring your own radio) is the largest annual fireworks display in North America.

The Freedom Fest includes a carnival, bands, and other events, all right downtown with all those adult things you like. (Casino, bars, strip bars, etc.etc.etc.)

If you think you might make the trek, let me know.... I'll try and send a package of what you will see and what it will all cost... (remember, american dollars go a long way here)

If anyone is thinking of coming to Windsor for this, check out this website for Freedom Fest info.

And a tip, Mello and Flywheel came here for a weekend and got a great rate on one of the city's best hotels. something like 40 bucks a nite for a 4 star hilton which is right downtown. Used priceline.com I believe, or something like it. Just an idea.

If you think you might come down or up for it, PM me and i'll help with what you need.
