Charlotte, N.C. 21.0/36 6. Knoxville, Tenn. 19.2/31 7. Jacksonville, Fla. 18.7/29 8. Nashville, Tenn. 17.8/30 9. Dayton, Ohio 17.7/30 10. Louisville, Ky. 17.3/28. NBC PR

OK. Right. NASCAR isn't really a southern sport anymore.....

While road racing ratings aren't exactly high, they always seem peak in major metropolitan markets.

Thats cuz its 2 totally different markets. NASCAR is trying to get into those metropolitan markets, but it takes time. This isnt surprising.

I like how ratings peaked between 6 and 6:30. Everyone tuning in to see the end only, as usual. :D

There is one oval that does great in major markets, and it's not NASCAR sanctioned.

Its not Indy, is it?

Looking at the DMA rankings of the cities mentioned above as the Top 10 for the race, the largest is Orlando, at #20. Ironically enough, it includes Daytona as part of its territory.

every year the race ends further & further into prime time. The record ratings are a result of this. THe last half hour had a rating of 13.5. NASCAr is growing incrementally, depsite the fact that it's pushed into everyone's* face 365 days a year.

are people watching because NBC put it on later in the day or did NBC put it on later in the day because more people wanted to watch and this was that was the best time to reach the most people?

this must explain why the NFL's marque broadcast matchups are on Sunday night, except they're on Sunday afternoon

Probably a little bit of both. Not to mention that this year was a special case, and that the race had to fit around NBC's Olympics coverage. Higher ratings also mean higher ad rates for next year at this time.

normally more people are at home on sunday evening. after spending the afternoon shopping, or down the pub, or any mindnumbing family activites.

I do appreciate seeing racing on TV, but...

WTF cares if we are not doing well in a major tv market? All I want is good racing in a place I can drive to in less than 12 hours.

When speeding I can get to Road America and Road Atlanta with lots of time left to buy beer and grill goodies during pit stops in that time frame. Those trips make Mid-Ohio just a run to the nearest Kwiki-Mart in my region.
