The Champ Car World Series will have a new vision behind the cameras to complement its increased television presence, as veteran motor sports specialist Mullin Production Group (MPG) has been appointed as the television production partner for the 2006 season.

MPG will produce the race coverage of all fifteen events of the 2006 Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford schedule that will air on CBS Sports, NBC Sports and SPEED. As producer, John Mullin will be partnered with a team of experienced race television professionals, including Gary Clem in the director’s chair.

In addition, MPG will produce the programming from the twelve events that make up the new-look Champ Car Atlantic Championship presented by Yokohama, as well a qualification program and the world feed for the international audiences. The Mullin Production Group has served as the production company for the Atlantic series for the past ten seasons.

“Mullin Production Group has a deep well of experience to draw from and we think that the knowledge and background in racing that they bring to the track will result in great broadcasts for our fans,” said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. “A strong television package is vital to our long-term success and today’s announcement is another positive step in that direction.”

The 2006 season gets underway April 7-9 with the nation’s longest-running street race, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Champ Car season opener will take place Sunday April 9, with fans able to watch all of the action live on NBC, beginning at 4 p.m Eastern Time. The Champ Car Atlantic opener will take place Sunday morning in Long Beach, with the race to be broadcast on SPEED Channel.

They said they were looking to improve the TV production, so this isn't a big surprise. I've got my fingers crossed on this one. A killer job on the TV product would makes a big difference to any series. One of the reasons MotoGP took off is that the video was worth watching.

John Mullin and his crew are class-acts, and I think they are going to do an awesome job with the series broadcast production.

For those who don't know the name, John Mullin was the face behind Diamond P Sports and their widespread motorsports broadcasts back in the 1980s and early 1990s, and his company has been responsible for the Toyota Atlantic and SCCA Runoffs production for the last several years.

Oh, yeah...I recall the Diamond P guys from the start at RA....couldn't believe the amount of cable needed to string that one together. Neither could they! :)

True, but don't you think the unfettered competition between the bike mfgs. and having the best riders in the world, including the best of all time, has a lot more to do with it?

Please not Derek Daly. I'd take Bob Varsha over Derek Daly.

Varsha in the pits, no way. He's a booth guy, plus, he does F1.
