Effectively at war with the sport’s governing body since the USGP controversy, Michelin had long been critic of the FIA’s intention to introduce a single-tire supplier rule for the 2008 campaign. The company’s decision effectively means that that goal will be achieved one year earlier than the FIA expected.

I don't recall marbles being that big of a deal in F1, but I think a single supplier has helped ChmpCar quite a bit.

Sorry, I think the competition they say they crave is what led directly to them creating an ultra fast tire...that couldn't stand 15 laps of strain in the last turn at Indy. They made a production choice and at least there they chose wrong. If they and Honda crave that competitive edge they talk about so much maybe they can make a deal to run in the HRL!
