PRUETT WINS BY 0.096 SECONDS IN CLOSEST-EVER ROLEX SERIES RACE
Native Californian Scott Pruett took control of his Lexus Riley Rolex Sports Car Series machine from co-driver Luis Diaz just 22 laps into the Ferrari Maserati 400 at California Speedway. Diaz encountered two serious problems which led to Pruett getting into the car earlier than expected. The first was a power steering issue, which is not good on a twisting 21-turn, 2.8 mile road circuit, and the second was a pylon being stuck in the windshield after being flung in the air by another race car. Pruett got into the seat in 19th place and rallied over the next 42 laps to take the lead on lap 65. He then continued to fight his ill-handling race car, building a 2.1 second lead over Max Angelelli with five laps to go. The hard-charging Italian pulled up to Pruett's bumper coming off the final turn on lap 86 but couldn't overtake him on the high side in the closest race in series history, 0.096 seconds at the stripe (April 3).

Katherine Legge won the Toyota Atlantic Series season-opener at Long Beach to become the first woman to win an open-wheel race in North America (April 10).
BUSCH BECOMES NASCAR’S YOUNGEST WINNER
Kyle Busch wins the 2005 SONY HD 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at California Speedway, becoming the youngest winner ever in NASCAR's premiere division at 20 years, 4 months and 2 days. Kyle dominated the race, leading 95 laps, on his way to his first career win in NEXTEL Cup Series racing. He joined his brother Kurt, who won the 2003 Auto Club 500, as a California Speedway winner (September 4).
