Speed will race in F1 in 2006 for what until recently was Minardi. I think it's fair to assume that the more successful of these two drivers will be Red Bull's candidate to replace Coulthard when he retires. So, Speed gets his shot in the bigs, now it's a matter of what he'll do with it. As things currently stand the teams running a restricted V10 like Toro Rosso will enjoy some level of advantage, although we can expect to see the large teams attempt to force action to further restrict the V10's.

I thought they were going to restrict the V10's so much they would be at a disadvantage. This was to encourage the teams to make the change rather than wait a year. The V10's will also have larger fuel consumption rates, putting them further behind the V8's.

Speed to Be 1st American at F1 Since 1993

By STEPHEN WADE
AP Sports Writer

LONDON (AP) -- An American driver is back in Formula One racing for the first time in more than a decade.

Scott Speed, a 22-year-old Californian, was chosen Tuesday to drive next season for the Scuderia Toro Rosso team. He's the first American in the series since Michael Andretti in 1993.

"I'm very serious about establishing myself in Formula One as one of the talented guys out there - not as some publicity stunt," Speed said. "I think I'm here for my talent, and I'm looking forward to being able to show that next year."

Honda is complaining that the V10's are up around 80hp on the V8 at this point and asking for further Rpm restrictions. May not be the same across the board, but it appears to be very close as opposed to a big gap.

If the restricted V10's have better reliability than the new V8's, they could still be competitive even if they are regulated to the back of the field. Maybe not podium finishes, but points paying ones. Tortise and the Hare.

Speed is gonna have to prove himself early in the season, because Jani has been having the results in A1GP this season. People like to dog that series, but Jani has shown some real racecraft and Red Bull will definately be using him as a carrott for Speed to keep up in the race results.

When they both sampled the RB1 for the first time this spring Speed was decidedly quicker despite it being his first time in an F1 and Jani's prior experience as tester for Sauber.

I hate to say it but Jani's testing for Sauber consisted of a seat fitting. AFAIK he never actually turned a wheel in the car as Sauber couldnt afford it (or something like that)....
