Just read a note on another forum that IRL St. Pete's race maybe done for 06. Anyone else heard anything along these lines.

Hell! Logic should tell you that the whole series is done for 2006!

I don't believe any of these rumours any more unless there's something substantial to back it up.

Yeah, like a speculation entry at AR1.

Even if it's false, I like to have hope that we can someday, someway get back there. THAT was a sunburn worth getting.

it's been awhile going into the winter feeling jolly.

cart is gone, hurray

the 3 amigo's made sure that the champar's will stay

before long tony will be calling asking them to save what's left of a once tradition in May!

The web site was down, so that inevitably lead to speculation. Probably means nothing.

It's a Honda funded event so I can't see them pulling the plug on it at this point.

It's still amusing since lemmings have frequently used missing web sites as evidence that Champ car events were in trouble.

It was a question asked by me at CCF. I talked with a friend in Tampa yesterday who told me that a friend of a friend told him the announcement was coming soon. I went to the website and as stated it was down so I asked if anyone knew anything. It was just a question, not trying to start any goofy rumors, just curious!

A "street race" worth being on CC's card.

I don't think it will happen, but we can always hope for the best. ;)

It was so much fun. Held during February. The weather was great, the race was great, met a lot of nice people. Only downside was coming home to six inches of snow in the driveway--with a sunburn. I WAS going to make it an annual trip. Oh well.

I suspect that it is a website error, nothing more. But it sure is fun to play the games that have been played when similar things happened with ChampCar sites.

Don't know. I think the entire reason Honda gave away so many seats last year was because they wanted people to see them beat Toyota.

Honda has only so much money to spend!

or

There might be a performance clause for number of races that the IRL has to hold or else Honda can void the contract. Maybe Honda really really wants to get out of their contract without looking like the bad guy. Honda will pull the yen away from Barry Green and Andretti for the promotion. Green and Andretti will take for fall for St Petes going away!
Honda then can activate the performance clause saying that the IRL didn't keep the race count as promised.....Then poof...their gone!

from speedtv forum:

AR1 reports a rep of the St Pete GP requested during the Nov 18-19 city council meeting financial help for the race, which was turned down. Shortly after that meeting, the GP of St Pete website was shutdown (http://www.gpstpete.com/). AR1 also reports regardless, the race will happen this year (will TG have to add supporting races to the family bill?).

Rumor has it Honda has told the IRL in order to supply a minimum of 18 cars (which even Barnhardt is saying will be the likely field size), and a larger field for the Indy 500 (IndyStar questioning if they'll come close to 33), Honda will need to scale back race sponsorship, and St Pete is apparently some dead weight for them. Honda reportedly lost $6.5 million on St Pete last year, the promoter only sold 5,000 tickets, with the rest being bought up by Honda, Marlboro and Firestone for promotional giveaways.

Probably HPD pushing back against the IRL's request for cheaper leases. "Well, we'll have to cut back somewhere..."

well i just requested to volunteer for next years even't. do you think they'll respond?

Hi,
I was just curious if you'll want some volunteer fans for the 06 race? With reports of honda not fielding the fans in the stands next year and st. pete only selling 5000 tickets this year I'm guessing you could use some help.
I'm sure the 3 amigo's running champcar would enjoy saving this event.

Oh well, like I said, it was just a question that I asked because of something mentioned to me. It wasn't like I put it on a rumor page or anything! For what it's worth, my friend said it's still 50/50 that the race will take place and that there are lot's of nervous people in St. Pete!

Is there a minimum car count required? Will the stragglers and fillers bother to show up?

Tickets for the 2006 Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg will go on sale soon! Renewal information will be mailed to 2005 customers.

Do they actually have the names & addresses of the 4,999 General Admission Ticket Holders ? ( I'm assuming Defender bought his ticket in advance)

Or will they ask the "Free Ticket Holders" if they want to come in for Free again ( Of course with Free Hot Dog & a Soda )?
