I just bought a wireles router (D-Link DI-624 Wireless Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, 108Mbps). It is hooked up and working. But I want a secured network with a password login to keep others from leeching off of it. I live next to a bunch of apartments and I don't want to provide free internet for the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I can find anything in the instructions for setting it up like that. What do I need to do?

Here (http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1506&question=DI-524%20/%20DI-774%20/%20DI-784%20/%20DI-624_revB%20/%20DI-624_revC%20/%20DI-624S%20/%20DI-774_revB%20/%20DI-614+_revB%20/%20DI-524_revC)....... And the other thing you could do is disable the SSID broadcast (http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1196&question=DI-614+%20/%20DI-624%20/%20DI-774%20/%20DI-614+_revB%20/%20DI-624_revC%20/%20DI-624S%20/%20DI-774_revB%20/%20DI-514%20/%20DI-514_revC) .

Even without the setting a password, most connections can be reasonably secured by encrypting the transmission. You will need to set a 16 or 64 bit hexadecimal encryption key, and use that key to access the connection with any devices you plan to use on the network.

And not broadcasting the SSID is definately a good idea too. :)

Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it sounds. Look up encryption in the user manual. :)

Just turn on encryption. Easiest and most effective is WPA-PSK. Basically in the router you just check a box and select the encryption and then enter a public shared key (PSK). Basically this is a word that is used to connect and encrypt everything. Then on your notebook you just check the same settings and enter the same PSK. The only people that will then be able to attach to your access point is those that know your PSK.

I named my network "Catch a Virus". Seems to be working...lol.

Haven't had a chance yet. It's been a very hectic week.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'll update you as soon as I try it.
