It looks like Cosworth found something to do with the 3.5 liter block.

Powered by an 80-degree 3.5-litre V8 Nicholson McLaren Cosworth engine, the Grand Prix Masters cars will produce in excess of 600bhp and reach speeds of around 200mph. Based on the highly successful Cosworth XB Indycar engine, Nicholson McLaren have developed this normally-aspirated version offering more than 600bhp at 10,400rpm while maximum torque is achieved at over 320 lb ft at 7,800rpm.

Is this the Chev-Worth power plant?

The XB was a 2.65L V8 and turbo...used in CART. How this 3.5 liter version is based off of the XB...i dont know....big difference there. Anyways, I bet its just the Chev-Worth plant too.

No, it has nothing to do with the Chevworth. It's the 2.65 litre Cosworth XB Champ Car block, stroked to 3.5.

The same motor is used in Binnie Motorsport's Lola B05/10 LMP2.

Not so sure about that...... Lammers is still pretty active. :p

He is already making excuses:

“I haven’t done anything in racing other than turn left, at very high speeds, for more than ten years. It has been a long time since I have driven on a road course."

I think Johansson will win this thing, with Lammers close behind. Hans Stuck hasn't sat in an open wheel race since maybe 1979! That's insanne! That's 25 years ago for crying a loud. But that's why Hans Stuck is the man, and when he retires from racing at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 2009* I will be there!

*Both of his sons race, and 1 will be 18 in 2009, so he wants to do the 24 Hours of Nurburgring with both his sons before he retires, but must wait until the youngest turns 18, which will be in 2009.

Cosworth built the 3.5l NA CART engine proof-of-concept from a 2.65l block (the same one used in Champ Car today) and heads so there must be enough metal in the older XB block for McLaren and Nicholson to bore and stroke it to 3.5l.

BTW, in the good old days (around 1981) Cosworth managed to make a 4.0l endurance racing engine out of the 3.0l DFV.

And what a wonderful season they had with it.

At least running against itself it stands half a chance.

Stuck is my sentimental favorite.

But if I were betting on an underdog, I'd go with Patrese. He looks fit and confident. Mansell spent two years over here, and still can't roll the bill of his cap. I can't root for someone like that. Dust him, Ricardo!

i see mansell as putting in a few fast laps and putting it in the gravel trap, then retiring.

none of the more famous guys will win it, It will be a stuck or another sports car person.

Funny, as soon as I saw that picture I thought the same thing. He was always a 1/2 second behind Mansell, but many think .4 of that was Mansells complete faith (balls?) in the active suspension. Anyone know if SPEED is going to show this stuff? It's got to be good television, I would think...

SPEED has to carry their usual line up of bike building with rednecks and interior decorating with NASCAR backmarkers before they can fit in anything else, so don't hold your breath.

Qualifying standings:
1. Nigel Mansell (Britain) one minute 33.428 seconds
2. Emerson Fittipaldi (Brazil) 1:33.998
3. Ricardo Patrese (Italy) 1:34.048
4. Jan Lammers (Netherlands) 1:34.082
5. Andrea de Cesaris (Italy) 1:34.086
6. Derek Warwick (Britain) 1:34.087
7. Christian Danner (Germany) 1:34.132
8. Eddie Cheever (U.S.) 1:34.602
9. Hans Stuck (Austria) 1:34.755
10. Stefan Johansson (Sweden) 1:34.841

I guess Cheever isn't doing too bad, at least he has Saladbar behind him. The biggest disapointment is Johnasson, after a full season of Grand-Am he get's toasted by guys who've been driving scooters around Monaco & Miami the last few years.

I'm amazed that there is only 1 1/2 seconds between 1-10 considering the layoff ... but I agree that Stefan is still active so you'd think he'd do better ..is it the car? ( just giving him cover !) ;)
