From SpeedTV

The 21-year-old suffered only a mild concussion and was kept in a nearby hospital overnight for observation, being released this Monday morning.

"He was a little woozy in the car when the safety crew reached him, but the [safety team] got to him very quickly,” said Team Japan manager Malcolm Swetnam. "He's a little concussed, but the car did an exceptional job at protecting him. The safety cell on the A1 racing car stood up to the impact brilliantly.

Where is the rool hoop?  If he would have hit the wall with the top of the car rather then the front, he would have been killed. :shakehead

That car held up pretty poorly IMO.

Is an airbox considered safe or less safe then the traditional roll hoop on a champ car?

That is the second huge wreck in what? 3 races for this series? F1 goes twice as fast and does not seem to do this

Who is this kid by the way, where did he come from? The first I've heard of him was at Le Mans when he was 18 or 19 racing an LMP1. Is he like a Gunnar Guennette type of kid with loads of money, that they just threw in the deep end?

Looks like a lucky man to get out of that one.

The crash pylon or roll hoop under the airbox is supposed to be just as effective, but I'm glad Shimoda didn't test that.

Looks to me as if the roll hoop is NOT part of the driver's protection structure.

Looks like its part of the engine cowling maybe....maybe not, but still it should be part of the main structure. Who's idea was that?!

Edit: After glancing at a few pictures, it looks like the roll hoop is NOT integrated into a main structural segment on the chassis. Thats horrible.

He races for Zytek. Won the pole at Mid-Ohio and the Petit Le Mans (where he crashed out in the first turn), and won from the pole at Laguna Seca.

Shimoda also did the majority of pre-season testing for Super Nova in Gp2 but lost out to Carroll and Pantano.
