Sherwin-Williams Design Award. Maybe we will fewer red cars next year.
I hope some teams beside Newman Haas have enough cash to afford fancy paint jobs.

Sherwin-Williams uses the term ‘Cover The Earth’ in its corporate logo, making it a natural fit for the Champ Car World Series, which spans the globe in bringing top-flight open-wheel racing to fans around the world. Today at the Specialty Equipment Market Associations (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, the two companies announced a three-year partnership that will see the Cleveland-based Sherwin-Williams company serve as a sponsor and a commercial partner for both the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford and the Champ Car Atlantic Championship. Sherwin-Williams will become the Official Automotive Finishes of the Champ Car World Series and the Atlantic Series, as well as the associate sponsor of the Champ Car Fast Lap Pace Car Program. In addition, the company will initiate the Sherwin-Williams Design Award, which will honor the Champ Car and Atlantic teams with the best paint schemes and color designs. “Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes is thrilled to partner with Champ Car – where the right team and preparation are critical to winning the race,” said Thomas Hablitzel, Vice President, Marketing, Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp. “As a new member of the team, we’re going to add color and excitement to the 2006 World Series with interactive fan contests and new team paint schemes. Now you’ll be able to see firsthand – it’s all about the finish.” Sherwin-Williams will provide its new Planet Color products to all the Champ Car teams and will also provide paints, finishes and associated products for all of the vehicles in the Champ Car Fast Lap Pace Car Program. The ambassadors of the Champ Car World Series, the Fast Lap cars are among the most visible machines in the paddock as they lead the field of Champ Cars and Atlantic machines around the courses of the world for every race of the calendar. “We are looking forward to seeing the new look that Sherwin-Williams is sure to bring to the Champ Car World Series,” said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. “We are especially pleased that this new agreement covers not only Champ Car, but also the Atlantics and the Fast Lap Pace Car team as well. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with Sherwin-Williams.”

Oh PPG used to do that too years ago! I got to help judge the Atlantic cars at Milwaukee when I was like 12 or something like that.

Great news. Some of the liveries have gotten pretty dull. PPI used to put out great designs back when PPG had the award. Of course it was probably easier with major sponsorships than it is these days when some teams seem to stick different sponsors on there every weekend.

Cleveland based company too. Very important for the Cleveland race to have increased corporate support. That was tops of their list for the future of the race. Should be good news for the race too

Maybe we will fewer red cars next year.

Or, we could expand the range of reds to include burgundy, maroon, magenta, fuschia, cabernet, etc.

Good job in getting these corporate partners to come on board.

Cool! Way to go Champ Car. I can't wait to see what they do with the pace cars for next year.

He wasn't the best driver, but in my opinion Luis Garcia Jr. had one of the prettier cars around:

At risk of being scolded about promoting other forums (but we are all grown ups here, right? :) ) have you seen the 88 page thread here http://www.champcarfanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25119 about fantasy liveries?

Some are very cool. Amazing the creativity that is possible when you have hundreds of people brainstorming ideas.

Dive in a few pages and jump around there is a lot of good stuff sprinkled around

I gotta agree with the comments on the MCI car. Simple design, great looking car.

Yep, one of the PPI cars I mentioned above. That, the Pioneer car, and Servia's chartreuse Telefonica car all looked great and were beautifully finished. When PPI got screwed by the manufacturers and Mo Nunn took over the Pioneer sponsorship it just never looked as good.

I too loved the telphonica car. Worst design? I always hated the N/H rainbow. it was like baby blue, yellow and orange (something like that) strips next to the black on top of the sidepods. I can't find any pictures online of it. The Andretti drivers suits looked like a B movie sci-fi space suit.

Do you mean the "disco cars" from 2000? You can find photos of them on speedcenter.com, including this one:

I love to visit those galleries and stroll down memory lane!

The one I'm remembering is more like '89 or '90. But it was similar to the 2000 cars, just add baby blue.
