I recently had my hard drive wiped clean and re-done.

After the re-build, I have noticed a few weird problems, one is that avatars and gifs wont animate. Such as the ROTFL guy, and rolleyes guy etc etc.

Ive been web searching forever, and have found other people talking about a similar problem, but all those threads just die off with no answer. The only one that HAD an answer was ZoneAlarm, which my PC does not have.

http://www.able2know.com/forums/about46485.html

Ive already checked the box that says 'animate gifs in webpages', and that doesnt help either.

Anyone have any guesses what mightbe interfering with this? I use IE and FireFox, they dont work on either.

Thx

This guy had the same problem and it turned out it was his nvidia graphic card settings...

"Thanks for the tip, Steve. Nview (in nvid1a)was disabled.
I enabled it and I now have animated gif's."

Do you have an nVidia graphics card?

If not, have you cleared your browser cache?

Same graphic card the ol' Dell came with. Worked fine before the rebuild.

If by Browser Cache, You mean tools-->Internet Options-->general-->delete files, Then yes, i have done that daily since these problems began (it is part of my other problem as well).

Thanks for the try though, Not sure what the deal is. Im sure it is simple, If I can just find it.

I did some searching with no luck. Any of you Winders experts know if there's a specific DLL responsible for displaying GIFs that might have gotten clobbered by some helpful program.

PG, you said your hard drive was "wiped clean" and "re-done". Are you positive that whoever did this actually reformatted the drive rather than just doing a new install? there's a difference and files can corrupt.

I found a thread where a guy re-installed XP and his gifs were fine afterward.

I would try a 'repair install' and see if that does the trick. There are many tutes on Google of how to do this. It's easy. Basically just stick your Xp CD in and follow the instructions.

Maybe this will help. http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=87630&query.id=245609#M87630

The guy at the end recommended going to Macromedia's website and downloading the shockwave player and then the flash player.

/\ XP Service Pak 2.

Ill check out some of those goodies tomorrow, Ill be home all day ont he first day of my vacation! Thanks for all the research you guys are doin'! I have spent hours and hours and havent figured it out yet.

Racar2C, I dont know the exact answer to your question, but the person who did the work does it for a living. Its all hes ever done, and the MOST stereotypical PC prson you could ever think of, short, 90 pound asian kid with 2 Dance Dance Revolution full size arcade games in his basement. but smart, and incredibly helpful. He is planning to come down to my house to teach e a few things on FTP, and will try to fix the gif problem when he does. But id like to fix it myself if possible.

That one suggests you check off some box.

Check in IE:tools/internet options/ advanced tab, and see if in the multimedia section, if you have enabled by check-mark, show animations in web pages. If it is already checked, might check settings for your firewall or any type of ad blocker.

Thanks so much for everybodies help!

Oh my ****ing god! FINALLY!

( and I did do the Dell PC check thingy, and did download and install Java , which I didnt have, but that didnt fix the prob).

I have had all sorts of problems with my PC since the rebuild, Primarily

A: I couldnt animate GIFS
B: Peoples Avatars were blurry looking
C: Couldnt open .DOC files fromm y wifes school website.

I have asked a million people and spent all sorts of time on suport lines, but I finally fixed the ****er by myself tonight.

Here is the info Id have paid good money for 48 hours ago:

Earthlink Accelerator.

Thats right. Im still on Dial Up, and when we redid the computer, we got the newest version of Earthlink, which comes with a product called 'Accelerator', which 'helps you surf the web up to 5 times faster' according to them. Well, Long story short, When I disables the ****er, I was able to open my wifes homework. So I came here, and sure as ****, all the gifs are moving again, And the girls in the Face of CHamp Car thread are all crystal clear! They were cartoony and blurry before. So now, My connection is slower, pics take forever to load, but at least what IS there is working properly.

For some reason, I have that feeling you get when you work on a no-start car for hours and finally get that first VRoooom to life. A feeling of total controla nd success. I HAVE WON. ****ing COOL> **** Earthlink. I need SBC yahoo. and it isnt in my area.

Oh yeah. I should have asked about that. Web accelerators crush graphics to increase speed. Makes most unoptimized graphics look like cr@p. :saywhat:

Yeah, I know, But I dont have the $50 a month, Plus, my only option is Earthlink DSL. Nothing else really available for me, 'cept sattelite which is a fortune. Id hate to pay for a DSL upgrade, when a cable modem is so much bettter AFAIK. So right now, Im just waiting.
