View Full Version : Gender Equality in Sports

Okay, so over the last few years a lot of hay has been made about women and men being equal, particularly when it comes to sports. Annika Sorenstam played in a PGA event; Michelle Wie has done the same. We've had girls playing high school and/or college football, and of course, many people have popped off over the Danimal.

It's not that I don't believe in gender equality, but I'm sick of hearing about it all. Apparently I'm not alone.

Former British Open goat Jean Van de Velde, tired of having women play on the PGA Tour to prove some sort of point, has decided to make a point of his own. Van de Velde will attempt to qualify for the 2006 Women's British Open. (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2205481)

"My whole point is where do we draw the line? If we accept that women can enter our tournaments, then it applies that men can play with women."

It's childish. It's ridiculous. It's borderline crazy.

And I love it.

One wonders how feminists around the world will respond, but it almost certainly will not be a popular move. I'm sure Martha Burke will at some point feel the need to say something incredibly stupid about the situation.

In the meantime, I suspect a lot of people will be rooting for this guy to make it. I'll definitely be one of them.

1) He won't be allowed to qualify.

2) He'd look really stupid when he didn't win, anyway.

3) Everyone loves an underdog, but no one loves a French misogynist.

Bobby Riggs, anyone?

I just noticed that you can't spell misogynist without S-O-G.

you forget to mention that Anika, Michele, and Danica all entered a men's sport and proceeded to get consistantly beat.

There is no upside to doing that. Which is why no one has done it.

Women's tennis is the only women's sport I enjoy watching. The level of play isn't crappy in comparison to the men. Soccer's too sloppy and slow, ice hockey? yea right... basketball? no thank you...

watching the impending Martha Burk implosion over this will be classic :D

jensen button seems to think there's a reason for that...
Button's Sexism Slammed (http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=102122)

Jenson Button does not think women will ever trouble him in Spa's Eau Rouge or Suzuka's 130R. The 25-year-old (BAR-)Honda driver told a men's magazine - 'FHM' - that ladies' biology could make their success in grands prix impossible, even if girl-racers like Danica Patrick and Katherine Legge are proving pretty handy in lower formulae.

"But in F1 cars," JB explained, "I can't see it happening due to the g-force in fast corners. And one week of the month you wouldn't want to be on the circuit with them, would you? A girl with big boobs would never be comfortable in the car. And the mechanics wouldn't concentrate. Can you imagine strapping her in?"

Britain's 'Sun' newspaper, though, quoted its female 'motoring correspondent' as slamming the BAR driver's sexism.

"Oh grow up," said Emma Parker. "If he spent less time staring at grid girls' breasts he might win more races."

So Flatasamanica shouldn't have any problem.

Jensen, two words: sports bra.

I'm just gonna leave the PMS comments alone, but there are some male drivers out there that one would think are in a constant state of PMS.

I'm with G. on this one. BTW, try jumping in soft sand sometime and see how much height you get.
