PKV's budget is a little tight this time of year.

2002 Champ Car Champion Cristiano da Matta takes a part time job as a grounds keeper for the Los Angeles Angels.

Probably took place sometime during 1999-2000, when PPI was near Anaheim.

The file name makes it look like it was posted on September 20th of this year. It looks like it was part of the Las Vegas pre-race promotion.

Agreed. That uniform design was dropped after 2001

It would be natural for one of the Mexican drivers to do some landscaping on the side, but a Brazilian? ;)

(Waving hand in the air wildly) I have the answer! It was 1999. I have a 12-page promotional brochure for the 500 at the California Speedway that year, which tells the story:

******************
ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD - Although he said he'd never seen a Major League Baseball game before, Champ Car star Cristiano da Matta knocked down a base hit with the first pitch in batting practice before an Angels vs. New York Yankees game at Edison Field.

Da Matta, Adrian Fernandez, Robby Gordon and Richie Hearn were on hand at the Labor Day weekend game, taking part in the exciting "Home Runs & Hot Wheels" promotion wherein select CART FedEx Championship series drivers warm up with the home team, throw out the first pitch and drag the bases during inning breaks, among other "hands on activities." The four drivers--who all left with writer's cramp from signing so many autographs!--made a big hit (pun intended) with SoCal baseball fans.
*****************

Nice photos of the 2-seater on the field (Robby driving it and tossing out a ball), and Cris, Robby and Richie posing with an Angel.

Wow, it's almost 6 years since the day I first read that brochure on my way to see Champ Cars for the first time! 10/30/99: the day I watched qualifying and fell in love with a whole new world. Thank you for the chance to stroll down memory lane, G.

And the day before we lost #99. :(

And the day before we lost #99. :(

That was a tragic day--it definitely cast a shadow on my newfound enthusiasm for the sport. :(

Getting back to the photo, da Matta sure looks funny next to 6'1" Gary DiSarcina! And so young, too.

How come the shadows don't match, or the focus is bad for one, and good for the other and they're only within several feet, with a telephoto lens?

The lights are partially on during day games so shadows are all screwed up.

If the photographer had the lens opened up all the way he could easily have a depth of field of less than 10 feet. Remember it is 35' or more from second base to the grass line, they are probably between 10-15' apart.
