From mere Intarweb speculation to Major Market Automotive Magazine speculation (tm).

The author probably sourced his speculation from teh Intarweb, but it does make fodder for contemplation.

ALMS would have been cooler, but if that couldn't happen Grand Am is a pretty decent way to round out the weekend.

So when does Grand Am release the rest of their 2006 schedule?
They have already announced 8 races including doubles with the IRl & Cup.
If they were going to race at Long Beach why would they wait on announcing it especially if Long Beach tickets are already on sale?

At Daytona
January 26-29

At Watkins Glen
June 3 with the IRL race
August 11 with the Nextel race

At Laguna Seca
May 5-7

At Lime Rock
May 27-29

At Mid-Ohio
June 23-25

At Infineon Raceway
August 24-26

At Miller Motorsports Park
August 31-September 2

Ah. From the Long Beach 2006 ticket sales press release "More races will be announced shortly."

The full Grand-Am schedule will likely be released this weekend at VIR.

I can't see 'em holding it as long as the Mexico City Champ Car race a month away.

Um, this is the same autoweak that said the new chassis would be announced by Vegas right?

So I guess this means they couldn't get the drifters back for next year...? ;)

Looks like it's going to happen.

news conference is scheduled for Wednesday when series and Long Beach race officials are expected to announce the deal that will bring the cars featured in the 24 Hours of Daytona to the streets of Long Beach, sources with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed.

http://www2.sbsun.com/sports/ci_3085098

It'll be a Daytona Prototype-only race on Saturday.

Grand-Am likely would bring its Rolex Series Daytona Prototype category to Long Beach, a class that features rounded, futuristic-looking chassis.

So that's what they are...futuristic-looking. :)

FCYTravis

And very, uh, "rounded."

He could have just said "bizarre" and been done with it :p

Assuming this is true......

I wonder what Champ Car's strategy is here? In the Philips article last week, it was stated that ALMS wanted this date.

Grand Am is running in Mexico this year so it is possible that the original agreement to run at Long Beach 2006 was made at the same time. Who knows if that is the case but it is possible.

I didn't see it addressed in the article, are they doing Mexico in 2006 as well?

No, Mexico in 2006 will likely be with Busch Series in the spring.

I have a feeling this has to do with a Japanese auto manufacturer that likes the color red.

Um, well, every single logo and banner they have anywhere has Toyota's name emblazoned in bright frickin' red :)

I always thought they had a thing for white. Guess I watch too much F1

Red with white is Toyota's color scheme. Look at the Chipsters cars (IRL and GA), the F1 cars, the GT One (all red), the IRL test hack Penske ran (mostly red), their ROI from the IndyCar Series.

Solid red is Target's color.

Excuse me for thinking Toyota F1 also uses the color white.

The traditional Japanese racing color (for Honda, at least) was white. Remember the all-white GP cars?

But Toyota's logotype on banners, cars, etc. is always bright red. Everywhere you turn at the TOYOTA Grand Prix of Long Beach, there's a logo banner with TOYOTA in bright red. So that's why I said red. :)

I never thought I'd live to see the day that a Grand Am vs. ALMS thread would turn into an argument about colors!

cameraman, ALMS left a hole in it's schedule to fit Long Beach, so I think this was a recent decision.

Costs, managed competition, aesthetics, technology & driver abilities all asked for the week off. Traditional horse-beating will resume Monday. ;)

Back on topic then, which is uglier the red side of the car or the white side of the car?

That squared-off front to where you can see the side windows curve into a box... :shakehead :(

Did they look at it while they were designing it?

Grand-Am released its schedule yesterday, and while Long Beach is on there, this year's Champ Car/Grand-Am pairing at Mexico City has been replaced by a Busch Series/Grand-Am twin bill, although speedtv.com says that could change to a repeat of the current arrangement.

http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/roadracing/20081/

It's a really stupid schedule they've put together. In a span of six races, from Homestead to Lime Rock, they have the teams going from one coast to the other four times. Swapping Phoenix and VIR would make a heck of a lot more sense. Or they could put VIR back in the fall where it belongs, maybe in mid- to late-September. If this trend of compacting the schedule to avoid NFL games continues, pretty soon if you want to watch racing after Labor Day it'll have to be Cup and Busch.

Well if Cup and Busch had any brains they would end their season sooner as well.

What? You're not obsessed with the chase? What worthless activity are you spending your viewing hours on otherwise? ;)

Well I finally watched a GrandAm race, about 2 hours of it. It answered a lot of "whatever happend to...?" questions. The cars however .... OMG .... those DPs have to be the ugliest things I've ever seen, a field full of DSRs would have been less offensive.

I have to ask, and I'm looking for a serious answer, why does the greenhouse look like that? They have that sleek armored car look, don't you think? But why is that necessary? Is the roll cage the size of a CJ5? As someone asked, where they looking at it when they designed it? The open air "greenhouse" of an Eastern modified is much smaller.

I fairness, I may be wrong but they do look a little better than when they debuted.

IIRC the reason is to slow the cars down, either by creating more frontal area, or by blocking the airflow to the rear wing to reduce downforce. I can't remember which.

1. Mack truck
2. Daytona Prototype

Need you ask?

At least the Mack wasn't designed by an idiot.
