Cool. So what's the over/under on a driver breaking down on the back half of the course and being mugged on his way to the paddock? :D

I was picturing the corner workers arriving at a Lola up on milk crates, minus four Potenzas. :D

But seriously, if they race in Philadelphia, I'll go.

And combined with this was mention again of a Las Vegas around a Casino race (which I thought would be a night race, too) and a possible '06 Houston event. Pray God they can come up with a better layout now that most of the city construction is done. I think Houston held the record for dumbest track until SJ came along. I think Penske is going to try to snake the LV race in a way that will make the battle over Long Beach look like child's play!

The last Miami layout deserves to be right up there amongst the worse.

From Philly.com:

Rizzo said the main drag of Philadelphia's track would most likely be the Parkway, and racers would fly by the Art Museum, Logan's Circle, Pennsylvania Avenue and other nearby streets.

When Newman laid eyes on the proposed track, he "fell in love with it," according to Rizzo.

No mention was made of Martin Luther King or Kelly drives, which previously were considered.

I haven't been able to find a map of the proposed circuit layout.

Let's just hope it's more like Long Beach than San Jose.

Is anyone from the Philly area convinced this will be a success? Maybe I am wrong, but when I think of cities that appreciate autos, Philly must rank near the bottom.

And does anyone who has actually been to Las Vegas think a race on the strip is more likely than winning at Keno? Walking along the strip, there are enough cars to convince me, they will never close down those streets to race on. As far as a parking lot track, I don't think the big Caeser's lot is around like it was for the races many years ago.

I'm not sold on a Philly race success. Hell, they couldn't be bothered to drive 30 minutes out to Naz.

I'd be more inclined to try a D.C. race, even with all of the hassle that that entails.

It'll never happen again. Not even NASCAR could pull that one off.

The ALMS did. Although they'll probably never go back.

Philly will be fine !!! and Nazareth is 1 hour 45 minutes from Philly proper ... 1 hour 15 minutes from Northwest Suburbs via Easton Road..or rt 309

I'd push for a DC race if I lived in Virginia too !! ;);)

Nazareth died because it got worse, and was switched all over the Calender ..
It was packed in the Fall ... then switched to the spring and and the crowds dropped & track stopped promoting it once Penske sold it !

The first year will be an EVENT Crowd for sure ... BUT Philly people have supported Events very well !!

The Politico's will be behind it 100% if its approved and Rizzo is a Leader of his Party, so he carries weight !

Philly will also draw from New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Washington , all less than a 3 hour drive !!!

Their BEST shot for publicity & Promotion & Eye Candy, will be to have it on the Parkway

The Bike Race drew over 125,000 along the route

They have a Food Extravaganza on the Parkway that routinely gets 75,000

Live8 800,000 on the Parkway

Elton John 100,000 for the Concert on the Museum Steps

Hell the Flower Show draws 250,000

The Inquirer played Newman's Visit up Nicely ... TV and Radio LOVE Events
Chanel 6 will probably produce a "Special" for the Race ( They do for Everything else !) ;)

Philadelphia is a Compact City of Neighborhoods but the suburbs are where they'll draw the crowds from!

SEPTA has great Transportation from all the Suburbs & the Airport ... Amtrack from the other Cities on the Corridor

Parkway is Easy Walk from Suburban Station ... Plenty of Buses & Cabs

What ended up doing it in, noise issues?

ALMS would go back in a heartbeat. The race was a rousing success by all indications. Except one:

Noise, NIMBYs, the usual. The politics involved are such that nothing short of (literally) an act of Congress could make it happen again.

I'd love to go to a race in Philly. I drove three hours to every CC race there was in Naz including the snow out. My sourness stems from the fact that I drove three hours to Naz, but Philly folks couldn't drive one. Year after year with declining attendance I would look across the half empty stands and say a big thank you to the millions an hour away. I guess they didn't have the flexible schedule I had.

Street race bananza!

I kinda figured. A real shame too, IIRC the layout ended up being much better than expected for a mostly parking lot course.

Newman, co-owner of Newman-Haas race team, has been more visible than ever supporting Champ Car racing, according to his first driver, former Formula One and Indy champ, Mario Andretti.

"Lately, Paul has been more active than I've ever seen him in supporting Champ Car," he said. "He's very visible."

Andretti said a Champ Car series was selected over the Indy Racing League because Champ Car has more experience with "urban events." Three of the Champ Car series' seven U.S. races this year are on city streets in Long Beach and San Jose, Calif., and in Denver.

Also, fourrunner, when are you going to answer badger's question?

I never read anywhere here that the IRL proposed anything, or was even considered for a Philly Race ... but Mario might have closer ties through Michael as to what the IRL did or didn't do here ... Michael is part of the promotion for St. Petes, so maybe he did try to talk to Philly Officials, and Champ Car had the better presentation and track record on Street Races..

Sorry I missed Badgers post ... but having read it, it is his opinion, and I won't say he's wrong, but Street Racing Drawing Crowds & Nazareth are two different Worlds ... Pocono still sells out for NASCAR, and I'm assuming a decent percentage is from Philly

This area sure USED to have an Interest in Racing, Pocono for CART was a big draw, until Mattioli got obsinate & worked against the series ... Nazareth was packed for the first 5 - 6 years, then they messed with the schedule, and the weather messed with what the schedule didn't ... then Penske sold to the one enemy that didn't want to work with CART, and the cars got to fast for the track

I think this Race in Philly (assuming it comes off ) will determine if the Northeast gets more Champ Car Races ... It will definitely have to "Retrain" the masses here about Open Wheel ... But what better way to do it than to invite them to a Party ... # days of Fun, Food, Racing, Celebrities, History, & some of the Best Restaurants in the Northeast !!

I don't know what to say, but if the Risk is worth taking, I think Philly is the place to take it !!

My understanding is the Houston race will NOT be downtown like CC wanted but out at the Reliant Park and stadium area. I say "good" as the open lots and curves in the streets seem to offer more imaginative layout possibilities. And...isn't "The Strip" at Las Vegas sort of expanding with new construction? I thought a new layout around that large new Casino (Wynn's?) was being discussed last year. (Then Penske showed up? )...would this make 17 races next year, even without Sebring?
