"Of course, there will be the other questions from casual fans, too. One is bound to be: "How come Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick aren't racing here?"

Here's why: The Grand Prix here will feature competitors from the Champ Car series, which critics disparage as AMERICANS THIRD-STRING RACING CIRCUIT. The top dog at the moment is NASCAR, which consists of large rolling stock cars rolling around mostly oval tracks. Thats is where Gordon races.

THE SECOND-MOST POPULAR AMERICAN CIRCUIT IS THE INDY RACING LEAGUE(IRL),which features racing machines similar to the Champ Cars-with open wheels,low-slung design, and wings to create the downforce that allows drivers to take corners at much faster speeds. THE IRL IS WHERE PATRICK, THE ROOKIE FEMALE DRIVER WHO HAS GRACED MAGAZINE COVERS, DOES HER RACING BUSINESS.

Why does an uninhabited planet have it's own internet newspaper?

The Mercury had a nice thick pullout section in Sunday's paper on all the drivers, the cars, the track, and the season to date. I also think they are a sponsor of the race and helped get it approved. Still, ignorance must be beaten out of people sometimes. Hopefully, Sunday's race will convince him who the top dog in AOW is.

I think the key phrase in there is "which critics disparage". Critics are always disparaging something. Certainly the piece is more than chairitable in calling the IRL the second most popular form of racing, rest of the story was very complimentary about Champ car being on the rise.
