This explains why there is crap on the air and real music almost never gets heard.

[url]This explains why there is crap on the air and real music almost never gets heard. Some things never change. The only difference today is that medial consolidation means there are only a fraction of the DJ's to pay off. Programmers rather than on-air talent are responsible for the vast majority of "spins" today. If all we see out of this is some nebbish getting a laptop or low four figure money then Spitzer must have the sun in his eyes. Big time payola to companies that own and program dozens of stations occurs at a much higher in the organization today and costs a lot more than the penny ante stuff referenced in the article.

FM radio killed AM commercial radio in the late 60's and then became it. Niche programming on satellite radio may finally prove a barrier the record companies can't overcome, but I'm not betting on it.

when MTV came on the scene, record companies loved it because they could reach all the teenagers in one fell swoop. It wasnt long before the same record companies had to call up MTV if they wanted to pee.
if someone has a price, then a new laptop & digital camera is a very low price to bought at.

The difference with satellite radio is that it allows for a lot more stations then the Am/FM bandwidth allocations allow for. Since the consumer pays for satellite radio , it takes commercial pressures off of the satellite stations. Cant see anyone paying for satellite radio if all that comes out is JLo :gomer:

I just remembered,

It isnt just payola that determines who gets played. each record company has their favorites whom they plug at every opportunity.

Remember when Dr Dre went to bat for the RIAA against Napster in the senate committee? Guess whose artists have dominated the charts in the past 5 years, thats right , anything with a 'produced by Dr Dre' label and it goes straight in at numero uno.
