There was much excitement in the Hockenheim paddock early on Friday evening when a garbage truck struck McLaren’s multi-million pound Communications Center.
The orange vehicle had entered the paddock to conduct its nightly clearing up operation when it clipped the canopy that overhangs the edge of the main part of the building. Several pieces of aluminum tumbled onto the ground with a loud clatter, and bare wires were left hanging out of the silver edifice.
The place shook with enough force to send the entire McLaren staff out to investigate the unfortunate incident.
The crash created much interest in the paddock as members of other teams and drivers such as Jacques Villeneuve came to investigate the source of the noise. Curiously a lot of people seemed to find it funny. Perhaps they had noticed that the truck concerned was a Mercedes…
