Maybe if it stays over $4 for a year or three someone will actually buy a Chevy Volt.

Meanwhile, production of the Chevy Volt has been temporarily halted to help reduce inventories.

I always thought that the Volt was going to be a tough sell at $40K even with tax incentives. But, I think it’s a very interesting concept. Even if it ends up being a commercial flop (which it looks like it will), I think it will go down in history as a ground breaking car.
The hurdles the car had to overcome are: The high price, the “Government Motors” thing, and the fact that for some, dumping on GM is a sport. Then the fires didn’t help.

Then let the game continue! So, "we" pay $7,500 to each Volt customer? The govt. is calling for an increase in that subsidy to $10,000...on a $46,000 car? To buyers earning an average of $172,000/yr! Just a temporary arrangement I suppose, until we see a Voltswagan the "people" can afford? It goes 25 miles on a charge? Awesome! It costs $18 to charge it up...over a TEN hour night? Yep, just plug it in, You can "save a crap load on gas!" What a SUPER commercial THAT is! I wonder who that little girl works for? Com. Ed.? I suggest we save at LEAST a crap load on that kind of advertising! I hear we just "invested" about $400 million in Peugeot, too. Didn't see that one coming. Maybe they'll enter a couple of Twin-Turbo Bio-Diesel/Electric Hybrid Peuvolts at Sebring? I think that would be a much better way to develop "the car we can't live without."

Having traveled a bit of Appalachia and the east coast this past week, I've seen it all, but I've yet to pay $4 a gallon....yet. Prices ranged from $3.62 in Hilton Head (with a range of $3.80 something to $3.54 on island) to $3.99 on the WV turnpike. Apparently ga$ in Cbus topped $4 temporarily while I was away, but had 'dropped' to $3.99 by this past Sunday. Yesterday I saw it for $3.81 @ the local discount grocery station with cars lined up for ga$.

Whilst we're also talking electricity-what's the average you pay per kW/h?

Since I regulate electric and gas utilities for a living, I should probably answer this question. This can be a little tricky to answer in Minnesota because there can be a slew of different rates on an electric bill (standard utility rate, resource rate for fuel costs, special rider rates for different projects). The standard rate that most residential customers, including my family, pay in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area is between $0.10 and $0.12 per kWh. I think the fuel adjustment is typically in the $0.02 to $0.03 per kWh, but don't quote me because I don't pay the electric bill or audit electric utility fuel costs at work.

For reasons unknown they take it out to a millionth of a dollar.
There is also a $4 base rate and about $2 in other random charges along with taxes that total 10.15%

$18 a month fixed charge! It looks like Australia has taken a different approach to setting rates. When I have looked at cost studies, this is about how much the fixed charge should be in the States, but customers would revolt if they had to pay that much every month, granted the per kWh charge would be lower.

So much for all that ethanol, eh?

http://www.ibj.com/livestock-farmers-still-seeking-pause-in-ethanol-production/PARAMS/article/35989

Livestock farmers and ranchers seeing their feed costs rise because of the worst drought in a quarter-century are demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency waive production requirements for corn-based ethanol.

The Obama administration sees no need for a waiver, siding with corn growers — many of them in presidential election battleground states Iowa and Ohio — who continue to support the mandate.

Hurricane Isaac and a deadly blast at Venezuela’s Amuay refinery pushed gasoline to an almost four- month high and threatened to revive a debate about energy costs in the run-up to the presidential election in November.
Futures jumped yesterday in New York as Isaac forced closures of Gulf Coast refineries and reduced rates at others. That market is also reeling from an Aug. 25 explosion in Venezuela that killed at least 48 people and closed the country’s largest fuel-making plant. Futures are up 23 percent since their 2012 settlement low of $2.5501 a gallon on June 21.
