UnitedHealth Group Inc., the No. 2 U.S. medical insurance company, said it will buy PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. for $8.14 billion, gaining the biggest manager of plans working with the U.S. Medicare program.
Carl Haas might have heartburn right about now. Hopefully it will not make any difference as UHG's previous purchases, like Oxford Health Plans, still exist as an entity with an independent advertising budget. So time will tell but PacifiCare is a huge sponsor of all manner of sports, it will be very interesting to see what happens.
