My AP is a tub of s&^t!

I bought my AP (http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=258&site=c).

I have to reset the thing every time I want to use it.

Any ideas?

Firmware updated? I've heard of this happening a lot to DLink, but not SMC.

Yep, updated it last night.

It's up & running now, but who knows for how long?

Weird thing is I can ping the thing but can't connect to it. DHCP expiring, perhaps?

I am on my second linksys........ (Nothing wrong was wrong the first (I gave it to a buddy)) I did have probs accessing it before a firmware upgrade, But once I didi....

Figured it out.

My Orinoco card doesn't support short preamble - the handshaking protocol between the wireless card & the AP.

My AP had a setting called "basic rate" - which I kept setting from the default of 1 or 2 MB to another setting that supports 1 through 11 megabytes.

Apparently, 'basic rate' on SMC routes is the same as 'short preamble'.

does anyone know of any links or sources where I can learn more of this technology. Maybe just describe your personal experiance with it and pros and cons.

I know nothing about it and I wonder if I could use it at home or office. I am currently converting a room at home to a home office. We have a desk top that I can link my laptop to by a cable so I and back it up and share files.

Currently at work I am in the process of having a new office built out and I am wondering if I should ask to have some way of linking my laptop to the computer system so I can exchange data and documents with it.

Nap:

Wireless is great, but it is slower.

For heavy-duty transfer nothing beats 100 MB a second CAT5.

But it's fine for web surfing.

Actually, Gig-E or 10Gig-E is much, much better. :)
