Its kinda like stealing a car and finding the signed title inside. Legally, you can sell it. But if you get caught, right or wrong, you will still pay.

The car is his pride and joy but the idiot put my name on the log book so I just sold it.

Yeah, I know her name was on the title, thus my comparison to finding a signed title. It may be technically legal, but if it was his car in her name, he can fight it, and will win.....especially given the proof in the auction etc. Like I said....if you broke into a car and found a signed title, TECHNICALY you could sell the car legally. But in the end, you sold what wasnt yours, and can be punished for it. That my take anyway.
