EDMONTON (CP) - A city-centre airport being quickly converted to a 3.1-kilometre street race circuit is promising a free-wheeling inaugural Grand Prix of Edmonton.
"Anything can happen based on this kind of track," said Greg Macdonald, president and general manager of the new stop on the Champ Car World Series schedule. "Here, you won't win the race in qualifying."
It will be interesting to see how it works out. The map I saw made the back section that's not on runways look pretty busy and narrow and the course isn't that long overall.

That's it. Of course the perspective of the map doesn't necessarily show the actual width of the course back in those area's but it's certainly busy.
So, thats about 1.9 mi?...any speculation on lap speed yet? Sure hope it's in triple digits.
is there some kind of law that says anything greater than 2mi must be nuked from the sched? wtf?!

Looks like the pit row empties back onto the track in the braking zone for turn 1 at the end of the long straight. Seems like a recipe for disaster, but what do I know? :saywhat:

Same type of pit exit as Cleveland. Left-right chicane onto front straight, pits parallel off to the left.

Hell, half the circuit looks like a carbon copy of Cleveland.
If it results in competitive racing, fine by me, but why not just race at Cleveland twice?

if I were to attend the race, I would make plans to be in the "Candaian Corner Beer Garden" down at the end of the Main straight....

There is quite a bit of room at Edmonton.
The start finish straight between turns 14 and 1 and the bit between turns 10 an 11 are on runway 12 which is 200' wide. The bit between turns 9 and 10 is on taxiway Delta, which is also 200' wide but unlike the rest of the track the center 100' looks to be asphalt. The narrowest part seems to be between turns 2 and 7 which runs the length of Bush Pilot Road. The bit between 12 and 13 and the pits are on taxiway Alpha which is 100' wide. Between turns 1 and 2 and between 7, 8 to 9 looks to be about 75' to 100' wide. The crossover (X-Ray) that is the 11-12 complex looks a bit narrow at the apex. Their is no shortage of concrete for them to play around with.
There is no way to make the course any longer without shutting down runway 16 and they can not do that.

Absolutely.
"YYZ," the title of a 1981 song from Rush's "Moving Pictures" is the transmitter code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. In a 1990 edition of the band's newsletter, drummer Neil Peart said the song is "loosely based on airport-associated images. Exotic destinations, painful partings, happy landings, that sort of thing." Peart plays the Morse code for "YYZ" at the beginning of the song. In 1982, "YYZ" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental.
