Ok, This came up when I was trying to figure out how to send X amount of money, and after losing 3%, having it come out to $20.00. This led to the following question on the same concept:

Your total bill is $1,058.30. The tax was 4%. How much of the bill was tax? I know the answer, I need to know HOW to get there. Thanks.

x*1.04=1058.30

x=1058.30/1.04

you're welcome. :)

(the original amount multiplied by 1.04 accounts for the original amount with the extra 4% tax...)

(waiting to find out I f'ed up simple math and having everyone laugh at me.)

Nope, but you might add that $1058.30 - x = y :)

Oh, and you can put yer shoes back on now. :gomer:

:laugh: <--- at ank

He asked how much of the bill was tax.....

you missed a step ,ank

1058.30 - (1058.30/1.04) = total amount of tax

I figure out the tip on my bar tab by how good looking she is, and how well she served me. ;)

Sweet, Thanks. I was actually coming in hoping noone had replied yet cause I FINALLY figured it out. Im 'helping' my wife study for her finals (which is like your 5 year old 'helping' you bake a cake), and I havent done this stuff in 12 or 14 years, and sucked at it back then.

Luckily, the magic of the internet eventually found the formula I needed, but thanks for spelling it out and answering my question.

You have not lived until you stood at the top of a ladder with a nail gun in your hand and said to yourself, "No."

Wife asks why you stopped, mumble something about not wanting to wake the kids.

Me too, but my eighth grade daughter is taking pre cal. At 37, I remember the very basics. Every kid laughs at why they need advanced math, the answer is...when you go back to school. :gomer:

Its called going back to school 12 years after graduating HS, and being forced to take a bunch of pre-requisite (sp?) crap before you can get to your major. My wife graduated HS early w/honors, and aced math the whole way, but after 12 years, a wedding, and two kids, You forget some stuff. At least WE did.
