Death Cab is nice... saw them at Coachella a while back. They are wusses though... kept complaining about the "sweat-proof" sunblock that kept burning their lil' emo eyes.

Got a call last night from a vendor who had free tickets for the Who. Yes, the freakin' Who, but I was stuck in El Paso... :(

Based on the live shows Sirius has been playing, you were better off in El Paso. Daltrey's voice is shot, Townshend's wimpy-ass Fenders don't touch the SG-through-Hiwatt glory of old, Pino Palladino is no John Entwistle, and the new material is godawful.

You very well might be right, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually heard it.

What about their earlier albums on Trance Syndicate and Merge, did you like any of those or are you just anti ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead.

The first 2 songs on "Source Tags & Codes" were OK, but most everything else they've put out has been merde-like. Saw 'em live once and the instrument breaking shtick was a bit played out, especially after having their asses handed to them by the openers (Explosions in the Sky (http://www.explosionsinthesky.com/), who may be responsible for the best live perfomance I've ever witnessed).

Fair enough.

I was fortunate enough to spend a night with the Trail of Dead when they crashed after a show in St. Louis at my buddies house. We had two breakfasts and lots of coffee with them before they went onto Fayetteville. I've been partial to them ever since. But the coolest member was Neil who wrote Mark David Chapman (their best song in my opinion). Conrad and Jason were working on being "rock stars with attitude". Unfortunately, Neil was kicked out of the band after "Source Tags and Codes" and the last album wasn't that good. That is why I'm wondering about the new album.

Agreed that "Open Season" was very much a disappointment.

Check out White Whale

Don't discount it. They've kinda strayed from guitar rock the last few albums, so having not only Buck but Scott McCaughey really playing guitar onstage helps immensely. That they've got the best drummer they've ever had playing with them now doesn't hurt, either.

California Man
High Roller
He's a Whore
If You Want My Love
Clock Strikes Ten
Best Friend
I Want You to Want Me
I Know What I Want
Voices
Downed
The Flame
Surrender
Goodnight Now

It'd be funnier if it hadn't happened to me. :shakehead

Years ago I used to hit the three-night stands the Dead used to do at Autzen.
Usually we'd crash at the place of whichever friend happened to be attending the U of O that year, but one year the invites were slow to arrive, possibly because of an ugly incident at Chelsea House the previous year (my memory is fuzzy, but I recall a lot of spraypaint being involved), so a buddy and I planned on camping. I had to work Friday, so he offered to haul my gear down for me (in a clapped-out Volvo, natch) and set up camp. No joke, the plan (such as it was) was that I'd recognize the blue tarp. I left my Mustang in Salem and took the bus.

The field where all of the 'Heads camped was like one big campsite, with everybody's stuff mixed together. I hiked through the middle of other folks' campsites for three solid hours before finding Bob playing my guitar while :flame: eating an enormous frosted cinnamon roll.

It was a very cool scene, sort of like camping with a few thousand of your closest friends. We never even locked the car, and no matter how many neighbors helped themselves to our ice chest, it never ran out of beer.

It'd be funnier if it hadn't happened to me. :shakehead

Yeah, any large gathering. The Dead days at Autzen were epic. The recent Oregon Country Fair had me reflecting on all the great times in Eugene over the decades.

BTW, my comment was a variation on the old Sturgis crack "I'll be the guy with the beard and black T shirt" which described around 100,000 guys most years. :gomer:

I'd like to get my hands on whatever philistine decided to schedule the Portland Historics up against the Oregon Country Fair. This year the IMSA/GTP reunion won out. Both of the BFG Lola T616 Mazda LeMans cars were there- not as cool as a 787B, but very cool just the same. And here I thought that I was the only gearhead hippie... :D

This year I had to pay to camp at the track. Man, what is this world coming to? :p

Yeah, started going to the OCF in 1976 but Historics would win out every time with me as well. I hear you on painful schedule conflicts. I had to give up the annual haj to the National Oldtime Fiddle diddle in Weiser, Idaho when CART put the race at PIR on the schedule in the 80's during the third week in June. :(

Well the fiddle contest is still there. Third week of June 2010.
You could re-haj...

As the cliche goes, you can never go back. I tried going back since the race here ended and discovered so much had changed in 20+yrs that it was almost like a different event entirely. The only positive change was air conditioning in the competition hall as far as I was concerned.

a few days late but acquired the new LCD & Broken Social Scene, and Hot Chip & Nada Surf too.

As the great warrior-poet Ice Cube once said, 'If the day does not require an AK, it is good.' Today was, indeed, good.

Saw Tab Benoit at a local Jazz and Blues festival tonight. Tab was excellent but there are three things that I could do without ever seeing again.

Drum solos - Please don't. There have been like two ever in the history of man worth hearing and the odds that you'll add to that count are infinitesimally small.
Bass solos - ditto
Local artist "sitting in" - if I wanted to see local artist play his workmanlike like set of entirely adequate blues I'd have showed up for that when he's supposed to play.

Agreed. But have you seen Tal Wilkenfield play the bass?
