Bjorn Wirdheim, the 2003 Formula 3000 champion and former Jaguar Formula One reserve driver, has signed to race in this year's Champ Car series with HVM.

The 24 year old Swede had been linked to a number of Champ Car outfits during the off-season, and is delighted to have finalised the HVM deal. "I have been trying to put a deal together in America for a while," he noted, "so it's great to be able to announce it at last.

"Keith [Wiggins] is a fantastic team boss, and he runs a really great team. I've seen how a few of the other teams operate here, and I'm really happy to be working with HVM."

Wirdheim, who is set to fly to the team's base in Indianapolis on Sunday for final preparations, is looking forward to the start of the season, which opens at Long Beach on April 10. "I can't wait to start racing again," he smiled. "Working in Formula One was fantastic, but I am a racing driver and I really want to race.

"I have been keeping fit over winter, and I'm ready to go. Champ Car is going to be a great series this year, and I can't wait to get onto the grid at Long Beach."
