The commercial for the latest, damn I forgot his name. The kid from That 70's Show and MTV's Punked, has a movie where his girlfriends dad says to him "what kind of sports do you like?" and he says, "NASCAR". Then they show the two of them driving go karts around the streets. :saywhat:
Wait until that Pixar flick comes out called Cars that Sean linked a few weeks ago. Every single kid under the age of 13 will think of stock cars as the only type of race cars there are. Sad but true.

Well the movie doesn't come out until next June, I'm sure a couple of kids might actually be awake at 3 AM to watch the Bridgestone Grand Prix of Fiji that summer. :laugh:
And you wonder why I push for them to concentrate on the domestic market and especially on building a grassroots base from karting on up. Someone can watch a NASCAR race on TV at a reasonable hour and then go to a stock car race almost anywhere in the country (just like baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, etc.). How long until there are only 6-8 places in North America to see a Champ Car race, and they are all only race tracks that are in operation one weekend a year?

oc Cult of personality, flash in the pan TeeVee marketing and lack of attention span "dumbness" is exactly why Formula One and Soccer will NEVER be popular in the USA. Both require patience, a love of the sport and some pretty heavy thinking to be a fan. Not gonna happen in this country. Champcar is in the same situation and they have to expand internationally while hopefully holding onto some traditional North American Tracks. They goal should be to get back to pre-split attendance at a few venues.

I've never had any deep thoughts while watching a race, from F1 to SCCA.

It's not "around the streets" (as implied by what's shown in the commercial), but at a NASCAR Speedpark or whatever they're called - you know, those NASCAR-licensed amusement parks where the cars you drive look like anything BUT stock cars (this was featured on "NASCAR Nation" a few weeks back...no way would I subject myself to watching that trash in a movie theater).
Ralph Sheheen, who obviously is desperate for work if CCWS can only find use for him on its CBS-broadcast races, ended the piece by proclaiming the two best movies about racing being "Grand Prix" and "Le Mans." Funny how neither of those are about stock car racing... :gomer:

I've been thinking the same thing and I hope that this fad passes like so many others. The marketplace is saturated with nascar related promotions so the short attention span segment will probably be looking for the next big thing to latch on to.
As a side note, I found it amusing that the dolts at Disney were filming a movie around a sport that their networks don't cover.
