View Full Version : Champ Cars on Road Course @ Cali Speedway

I was working today just across the parking lot from California Speedway and heard a very familiar noise coming from the racetrack! Had to be a few Champ Car teams testing on the road course for SEVERAL HOURS! Was pretty much non-stop sequential shifting turbo music from about 9AM til after 1PM when I left work and drove over to see if I could get in to see! I asked the guard at the gate if I could go in and check it out, but he said, "Not unless you want me to lose my job." I said, "O.K., if you don't mind." (not really) I just pulled up and made a U-turn. As I was heading back out, a guy in a car who had been waiting behind me shouted, "Hey, I like your license plate!" (guess what it says) I just smiled and said 'Thanks." DUH!!! Not, "Hey, I'm a big Champ Car fan, can you get me in?" (like I should have; idiot! gosh.)

So anyone know who was there today?

(And if that guy who was behind me is reading this, I will buy you lunch and beers if you get me in tomorrow!)

Correction: multiple teams:

There are nine drivers testing here at California Speedway: Vasser, da Matta for PKV Racing, Tracy for Forsythe/Indeck, the two RuSPORT entries for Allmendinger and Wilson, dual Rocketsports cars for Hunter-Reay and Glock, a single Walker Racing Lola (first time out in that chassis for this team) for Mario Haberfeld and Atlantic star Andrew Ranger in a Mi- Jack/Conquest Lola.

Champ Car - Ex-F1 drivers lead the way
Seven drivers test at Fontana

It hasn’t taken long for 2002 champion Cristiano da Matta to climb back the top of the Champ Car time charts, but Tuesday’s testing at Fontana showed that the rest of the field wasn’t about to let him get away clean.

If all the current AR1 rumours are correct, you will get your wish next year.

Monterey moved into April - China & Japan in MAy - then back for Milwaukee and Portland in June.

NO ****!!! I could've spent the last two afternoons there after work! And the weather was PERFECT!!! Made me sick to only be able to listen to the ChampCars these last 2 days. I left work at 3PM today and they were still on the track! Couldn't get in again.

Yo, "NUT.... the last, and I mean LAST thing that you do when approaching a gate where you are not allowed, or do not have the right tickets.... is actually STOP and ask if you can go in.....

I call it the "assumptive close" and just wave whatever credentials\ old tickets \ parking pass you may have in your possession, and just wave it at the $5.15\hr "moke" that has been hired to stand there and act important and stop you from gaining access to your desired target. I have also found that holding up a credential with a (insert value of "dead president" here) bill folded neatly into the ticket, so that when you show it to him, he sees that you are a man who gets what you want, you just have to determine what value gains you access to the deal....

It pretty much works every time. Or you could be like Manic and pretend that you work for a "small, local newspaper" and you are a member of "the press".... seems to work for him ! Or better yet, pretend to be Dave99 and tell the guy you are there to collect the autograph of some obscure driver from the 70's who is now a team owner.... whatever dude !

Just remember, those guys get $5.15 per hour, and $20 still goes a LONG way in this country, whether you are trying to get access to a restricted area at a race track, or talk a dancer into that "3 - for - 1" lap dance special you just missed out on.... give it a whirl next time....

Take a diaper bag. Make sure it's full of diapers, bottles, wipes, etc. Tell the guy that you and your wife and kid went in earlier (through another gate is preferable), but you forgot the diaper bag. You ran back to get it, but were in such a rush that you left the credentials with your wife, and for obvious reasons, you need to get in there. Look pathetic and desperate.
In like Flynn.

I have brazened my way into several places trackside just by acting like I belonged there, but those security goons at Fontana can be pretty nasty! I thought about going to the track and finding out how far my charm and possibly something green and foldable could get me, but it's a looooong drive for such an iffy proposition.

They used to call that a "four wheel drift". I guess it will have to be "power oversteer" now to avoid confusing the kids. ;)

They never let the public when they tested at Nazareth. I snuck in once but was asked to leave when I was sitting in the stands. I should have found a way to sneak through the tunnel to the infield and stood on top of the pressbox. I wouldn't have stood out there.

My fix was to sit on public property right outside the fence in T2. There's a gap there and I could see most of the track. Stopwatch and scanner in hand, it was as good as being inside.

BTW, I drove by there on Saturday. About 1/4 of the grandstand is now down :(

Competition from drifters? How 'bout the GT500s? I'm only assuming the 1.45 mi. infield track is the same one used by both the JGTC and CC at the Fontana tests...Richard Lyons, NISMO Z, :D ,53.34....Justin Wison, RuSport Lola/Cosworth, 52.71. Hmmm... Status quo will NOT cut it beyond '06...Cosworth stays, but we need a new, lighter, FASTER tub! (and maybe we could use Lyons, too!)

A 13 turn 1.45 mile course isn't exactly a showcase for a Champ Car's capabilities, but I'm still skeptical that those times are under comparable conditions. Got any numbers from someplace like Laguna Seca?

UPDATE: a co-worker of my husband's was at the testing session, as guest of his friend who's a Cosworth engineer. Specifically, the engineer working with CdM and Jeemy! Co-worker was kind enough to share some awesome photos of the session, as well as some amusing stories (such as drag-racing Jeemy out of the exit gates as they all headed home). :D

Excuse me while I die of terminal envy...

Ahhh, glad you agree with me, then. How 'bout the 1.3 mi. 10 turns at San Jose? Same point. Of course the JGTC hasn't run at Laguna...yet...but they may want to. They're looking for two events in the US next year. I'd rather see CC teaming with the GTs than the drifters...but that's only because I'm a race fan, not an event fan.

Ahhh...right you were, nr, I'm told the CC test track configuration at Fontana includes 4 more turns (a double chicane) than the JGTCs raced, and estimates are Champcars would be up to 7 additional secs. faster than the Gt 500s. I am relieved to hear that, but still am against using these same "updated" tubs beyond '06.
