It's seven months off but RaceGrrl and I are planning to make the Vegas race this year. Yeah, it will suck if they run the same stupid wing package, but it's a Champ car oval race and it's VEGAS for cryin' out loud!

We're planning on getting the best deal on decent accommodations for the race weekend and then spending the week before or after at the MGM Grand. If anyone spots good deals on airfare or hotels please post here.

Check Southwest (if you don't mind un-assigned seating). They're usually pretty cheap outta C-bus... less than $200 on the times I checked.

Thinking of doing the same. Last time I went to Vegas it was for the Fontana race in 2003. So I ended up spending an extra day in Vegas rather than drive to the race. Got my best deal on SWA Vacations, find it on the Southwest site. Has packages for every hotel. Pretty good deal.

PM me if you want to stay on the strip @ MGM or Bellagio. I have a contact that works @ MGM. The wife unit and I got a casino-rate room @ Bellagio a couple of years ago @ $199/night (normally like $350/night).

If you want to save a few $$$ and stay off-strip, try the Residence Inn. They have a complimentary breakfast AND (fairly basic) dinner buffet. If you don't want that, there are five restaurants spread out in a fan around the parking lot. It's at Flamingo and Paradise IIRC. edit: free, uncovered parking

We stayed at the MGM last time we were out there and loved it. I don't know how to describe it except to say that it felt like a grown-up's casino instead of the amusement park feel that some of the other casinos have.

Kind of ironic seeing as they have an amusement park on the grounds.

Are you talking about La Femme? I don't think they'll let you play on those rides. :D

That just shows you that we were more interested in other amusements. :)

They certainly didn't play it up at all when we were there last year and I don't recall seeing it. I can't find any reference to an amusement park on their website, and a google news story indicates that it may now be closed.

Everything I'm seeing says that the MGM Grand Adventure theme park closed to the public in 2001.

It is true that when they first launched, MGM was at the forefront of the "Las Vegas for the whole family" push, but I think everyone now sees that's not what people go to Las Vegas for.

In any case, I think the "amusement park" feel that Grrl is talking about is just the sensory overload that you get in a lot of the casinos.

If anyone is interested, I have an "in" at one of the downtown hotel groups, and am trying to put together a deal for some rooms.

As of now, we have 7-8 people staying at the same place and I feel that the larger the group, the better the logistics to/from the track and CCIC functions.

I'll be up there in 2 weeks to see if anything can be done to remedy last year's (Friday) transportation problem, but if necessary, I'll rent a minivan if there are enough riders.

Feel free to PM me if any of this sounds good to you.

Looks like we'll be coming out to Vegas again for the race. Flying the first airlines to add airbags for your safety http://www.hootersair.com/ .Flying out of Rockford again, $99 each way, free parking, nice little place, maybe an hour west of me.

Has anyone purchased their tickets yet? I'm wondering if it is the same deal as last year. Also wondering if we will get any discount through the CCIC.

For motels, we stayed at the Venitian last year and it was very nice. We're thinking of trying the Belagio this year.

The tickets are available throught the LVMS website:

Same "ChampCar Fanatic" deal as last year: $61.50 each for an Earnhardt terrace seat and paddock pass.

Grandstand seats (other) are available for $36.50-$40.00.

BTW, If you call the Venetian a "motel", you must be a lot richer than I am!

My wife really doesn't like oval races (nor do I that much). A little pampering in the lodging area helps her get over it.

Thanks for the ticket info. Looks like the "ChampCar Fanatic" package again.

I'm not going since the last ever SCCA Runoffs at Mid-Ohio are that weekend, but I have a friend at school who flies out to Vegas several times a year that is thinking about going on that specific weekend for the NASCAR Truck race. I told him the Champ Cars will be running too, and he should check it out.

Anyway, he is showing some interest, and I told him I'd check out the forums I post at to see if there are any discounts/freebies to be found as far as tickets for the race are concerned, so does anyone know?

SOG, the ChampCar Fanatic package is available through the LVMS website.
$61.50 per seat for Fri/Sat including ChampCar paddock (not a bad deal, IMHO).

The good news is that Ziggy and Co. (chief steward) are tweaking the aero package so as not to duplicate last year's "pseudo-crapwagon" racing. The bad news is, we won't know how much until we get an official announcement and they do some testing there.

It should be better this year...ChampCar has had a whole year to do it right, whereas last year the whole deal was put together in 60 days.

To celebrate the good news from Long Beach I completed our travel arrangements for Vegas this morning. Staying at the MGM this time.

FYI, I ordered the Champcar Fanatics tickets about a month ago, the seats I got are about a dozen sections closer to start/finish then last year.

If you've been waiting for fare deals, check around. We just got a good deal on Delta. Stop in Cincy on the way out and a stop in Atlanta on the way back. All Boeing. $215 round trip from CMH.

Now we just need race tickets and a decent deal at the MGM for Sat-Thurs.

FYI, If there are any Bobby Flay fans here, He now has a Mesa Grill open at Caesars Palace. We've got a reservation for Thursday.
