Greatness indeed, moved the Boys from a group that many felt were Top 40 material into true artists. It also pioneered the art of sampling, and I feel it is still one of, if not, the best use of sampling in music. The final track, which is in reality about 8 tracks, is one of my favorites. In fact this thread makes me want to listen to the album again. The album isn't what I consider the best Beastie Boys album, but it is either tied for second or in third place. For purposes of discussion this is my order for best albums from the Boys:

1. Check your Head
2. or 3. Paul's Boutique
2. or 3. To the Five Bouroughs
4. Ill Communication
5. Hello Nasty
6. Licensed to Ill

My preferred order:

1)Check Your Head
2)Paul's Boutique/Licensed to Ill
4)Ill Communication
5)To the 5 Boroughs
6)Hello Nasty

For me, I could have easily listed them in chronological order. I just really like the early stuff. The new stuff ain't bad, either.

See, this right here is a great reason for an iPod. I haven't listened to Paul's Boutique in a long time, I read about it here, and instead of thinking about it, I just scroll that stupid little wheel and listen. Nothing like having your entire music collection at your fingertips at all times.....

And you're right, it was a good album!

I guess I'll be the spoiler here.

I don't rate it high and never did. I just (IMHO) don't think the Beasties are all that and probably never will.

If anything and again it's MHO, I think they're WAY overated.

We need to thank the Dust Brothers for the revolutionary sampling but give the B-Boys credit for going in a different direction after a big pay day with Licensed to Ill.

Like Sam the Butcher bringing Alice the meat,
Like Fred Flintstone driving 'round with bare feet

It's a gooder, but I like Check Your Head a bit more.
