Sauber quietly unveiled its 2005 Formula One challenger on Thursday, ahead of its scheduled test in Valencia, Spain.

The Swiss-based team were scheduled to launch the car at a splashy event in Malaysia to mark oil sponsor Petronas's 10th anniversary in Formula One. However, the team cancelled the January 11 debut out of respect for the victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.

Felipe Massa is scheduled to give the car its track baptism on Friday while Jacques Villeneuve will get behind the wheel of the C24 on Sunday.

While the car is based on last year's successful C23, it is the first to be designed from scratch using the team's new state-of-the-art windtunnel facility. Conspicuous about the C24's design is its sidepods, which have an extreme undercut to achieve optimum air flow. The same objective was pursed with regard to positioning the exhaust tailpipes, which have been integrated harmoniously into the bodywork.

The side pods are fairly unique. Hopefully it's as fast as it looks.

Yeah, particularly when seen from the front. At first glance I thought it didn't look effective aerodynamicaly - but then again I thought the same thing when I first saw the sidepods that Lola introduced for the current Champ Car design. :gomer:

*sigh* I love this time of year. :)

question though, wasn't it Boeing that signed a technical partnership agreement with Renault last year? I ask because I see that D'ssault has their brand on the Sauber's nose..
