They couldn't think of a better name? Maybe they'll have a sportier model called the SYNus Nfection.

I think the guy who named it is probably the same guy who put this in the "promotional" literature,
"The architecture of the SYNUS comes from the Ford Fiesta."
Somethings are just better left unsaid.

The Ford Fiesta was a great little car when it was available in the US and by most accounts it's still one of the most fun little cars you can get for your money in Yurp. Ford has lots of good options for bringing the Fiesta platform to the US - the Fiesta, the Puma, the Kha. I might even own one if I could buy one.

But NOOO. Their concept for the Fiesta platform in the US is a friggin minature ARMORED CAR!

I had the misfortune to be in Cobo Arena when they rolled that POS out.

Good Lawd, is that the stupidest concept in history? Must be at least on the top ten list.

I don't remember our Fiestas (we had four over the years) being particularly troublesome given their age. Considering that they were German cars they weren't bad.

Back on Ford concepts, at least not all of them were so ugly.

that armored wanna be thingy sure is ugly!! But it has some cool features - like the driver doesn't even have to face the front... WTF!!

Get rid of the security features and it becomes 94% less stupid.

Or just get an Element.

Sorry nrc, I think that GR1 looks like it came out of a '70's David Carridine movie. Did they splap that front clip on right before the photo shoot?

Now here's my favorite new concept car.

Today, the trend is back to big cities. The Ford Synus concept is aimed at those taking part in this shift.

When parked and placed in secure mode, protective shutters are deployed over the windshield and side glass. Small windows on the flanks and roof are non-opening and bullet-resistant. The rear hatch has no window at all.

That's quite the statement Ford is making about life in modern urban America.

Good catch! GM Suburbans have cup holders for all the kids. Ford's Urban has gun slots. :saywhat:

Sounds like someone at Ford watched Stripes too many times - it's the Urban Assault Vehicle!

More armored than you think.

The North American versions will be assembled at Ford’s Cuautitlan, Mexico, plant with production slated to begin in early 2010.

We can't match our foreign competitors on wages and benefits.

What purpose are they serving then? :saywhat:

I've been following that. Great news, only about five years too late. The sad thing is that the U.S. version will not likely include the fun stuff they get in Europe. The Mazda 2 on the same platform will likely be more fun.

But who knows. They surprised me. They just did a really lame reskin of the Focus (started pre-Mulally) that looked like something from Korea. Even though sales have skyrocketed because of gas prices, they've worked on it and will offer a cleaned up version in 2009. The platform is still two generations out of date but at least they seem to recognize the misstep.

But how would they be doing if they'd had the foresight to bring over the up to date Focus platform along with the Fiesta two or three years ago?

Well, the view from Detroit can be grim. But why claim the windows are bullet proof, is the rest of the car? Seems like a youtube/lawsuit opportunity waiting to happen.

potential markets:
1. post 'pochy-clipse Road Warrior commuter
2. downtown Baghdad
3. former Hummer owners
4. the Pope (for the weekends)

The sad thing is that the U.S. version will not likely include the fun stuff they get in Europe. Sad us right. Meanwhile, MINI is flooded with backorders trying to keep up with demand for tiny cars that do have the fun stuff. And fun-to-drive part comes standard on the MINI, another thing Detroit might want to consider.

The market geniuses in Detroit still seem to believe small cars equates to cheaply made low content cars, a mistake they've been making since the Vega, Pinto, Gremlin, etc. were disgorged into the market nearly 40yrs ago. The Accord and BMW 3 series showed how lost Detroit was by defining the mid and high ends of that market, and helping to build the companies that made them. The only time Detroit laid a glove on them was with the Taurus and they quickly lost their way.
