I had to laugh when the ABC announcers talked about Indy Racing League founder Tony George's vision during the open wheel racing series' anticlimactic season finale at Texas Sunday.

George's "vision" has been to steal most of the best teams, drivers, engine manufacturers and now, road course events, from the rival Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) series, which is struggling to stay afloat in its new guise as the Champ Car series.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Champ Car should consider itself more flattered than the late Elvis Presley. The IRL on Sunday even stole the driver-in-the-crowd introductions that Champ Car created for its debut at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last month.

IIRC, the IRL did that at TMS at least once before in the past. (Didn't they even have Michael Buffer doing them?) It is probably an SMI thing.

Nice to see that someone in the media outside of SI has a clear grasp of the Vision.

Hey, Ron Kantowski gets it!

Can someone explain what "driver-in-the-crowd introductions" is?

As the drivers are introduced over the P.A. they walk down a designated aisle in the grandstand (accompanied by their grid girl) to their cars, which are already gridded on the track.

I thought it was a unique way to introduce the drivers, and if you are lucky enough you can pinch the grid girls as they pass by.

Wasn't there a photo that showed the irl drivers also get ummmmm 'excited' about driver introductions? ;) :D

That doesn't sound like the kind of photo I'd remember... Not that there's anything wrong with that. :p

The gauntlet has been thrown down. Time for CCWS to bring on driver intro's amidst a mini-fireworks show, loud heavy metal rock music, with each driver escorted to his car by a scantily clad female manager ala WWF. :p
