CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY SUPERSPEEDWAY OVAL TO 2004 SCHEDULE

LAS VEGAS (July 7, 2004) - When the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car
World Series Powered by Ford decided to add another night race to the
2004 schedule, it was only fitting that the series visit a city where
nightfall merely signals the start of the show.

The Champ Car World Series announced Wednesday that it would add a visit
to the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway September 24-25 for a two-day
event. The open-wheel machines will share the weekend with the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series on the superspeedway oval with both series racing
on Saturday night. The Champ Cars will close the show Saturday night
with the Champ Car Las Vegas 400, tentatively scheduled to begin at 9
p.m. Pacific Time.

"The addition of a Champ Car World Series event is great news not only
for Las Vegas Motor Speedway but also for Las Vegas as a whole," said
LVMS general manager Chris Powell. "The Champ Car World Series offers
some of the fastest and most technologically advanced race cars in the
world and the fans attending the Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck
race now will be treated to an additional adrenaline rush. We're excited
to offer such a great night of racing to the fans of Las Vegas as well
as to those who are drawn from outside the community."

The LVMS superspeedway will be the first for Champ Car since last
season's visit to EuroSpeedway Lausitz where Sebastien Bourdais (#2
McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) nipped Mario Dominguez (#55
Herdez Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) and Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9
Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone). Bourdais escaped a brief ride
on the infield grass and found a way to win a race that saw the
top-three drivers covered by a scant .245 seconds.

"We have been interested in holding a Champ Car race in Las Vegas and
the opportunity to partner with Speedway Motorsports Inc., made it
attractive to us," said Champ Car President Dick Eidswick. "Television
ratings in Las Vegas have consistently been strong for Champ Car races
in the last few years and we have a strong fan base in that region."

The Champ Cars ran under the lights at the Milwaukee Mile in June in a
race that saw Ryan Hunter-Reay (#4 Herdez
Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) lead from wire-to-wire in taking his
first win of the season. This will be the fourth night race in the last
two years for the Champ Cars, having run in Milwaukee and Cleveland in
2003 and conducting a night race in Milwaukee this year.

"I am really excited about the addition of Las Vegas Motor Speedway to
our 2004 schedule," Hunter-Reay said. "Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a
state-of-the-art racing facility, and I am very happy to race on another
oval this year as Herdez Competition had a record-setting weekend when I
won in Milwaukee. The diversity that Champ Car offers by racing on
ovals, road and street courses makes it the most unique and challenging
series anywhere. I can't think of a better place to display our product
than Las Vegas."

Four of the Champ Car drivers call Las Vegas home and get the benefit of
sleeping in their own beds on a race weekend. Defending series champion
Paul Tracy (#1 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgstone) is one of the four
and is pleased about the opportunity to race in Vegas.

"I can't tell you how excited I am about racing here," Tracy said. "All
of the local guys have been out to the track and it's a first-class
facility. It's the right type of venue for our cars. The fact that this
is right in our backyard will open up a lot of opportunities for us to
be able to test and really make this a big event."

Fans can purchase a special Champ Car ticket package for the two-day
event through the Las Vegas Motor Speedway box office. The Champ Car
Ticket Package sells for $61.50 and includes a reserved grandstand seat
in the Earnhardt Terrace both nights as well as access to the Champ Car
paddock area. The Champ Car Ticket Package must be requested directly
from the LVMS box office at 1-702-644-4444 (in Nevada) or 1-800-644-4444
to receive the offer.

I wish I would of taken the time to read that before I fired off the email to LVMS asking how do I get tickets. :D

How will we know the race results? What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Seriously though, not a parking lot race, and there's a lot to be said for that! Plus, OWRS filled a TBA slot, and that speaks volumes!

So how does this work biz wise?

NCTS was already scheduled to be there, right? Tickets already printed and mailed and such?

Adding OWRS to the bill is, I guess, not very risky since the track will already be open to accept fans and the like. The expectation then is that they will sell enough extra tickets to Champcar fans to justify whatever it cost to add them to the bill?

With the season already underway and every series/track schedule already published I guess this arrangement is not to surprising and is low risk way to test a market.

Glad to see it and glad to add a relatively flat superspeedway oval, though in Vegas I would rather see racing in the streets downtown (not a parking lot). That would be a scene.

Just got done ordering tickets.

FYI the 61.50 includes admission to everything both nights except the truck paddock.

The CSR I spoke with insists they are only selling tickets for Saturday.

After requesting a supervisor, I was then told Friday is open to the public regardless of having a Saturday ticket or not.

Additional ticket info is... these $61.50 tickets are for the Earnhardt terrace (wider, padded seats with cup holders located from Turn 4 to the pit-in) and seating is reserved. Seats not in the Earnhardt Terrace will be sold as general admission and will sell for $10 less, which I assume will also include paddock entry.

Anyways...I'm good to go.

Sounds like you ask more questions then I did. :o

Still not a bad price including the paddock pass. I wonder if the paddock is open to all on Friday then?

Yeah, why would Champ Car want to add an event on an actual RACE TRACK?

I was flown out to Vegas for the Cup race, the seats are padded and the view is a bit over the top. They built the first rows of the terrace above existing seats. I suggest lower number than the nose bleed seats. Teeny tiny cars kinda sucks. IMO

How is the Terrace section for pictures? Does the fencing get in the way if I sit in the lower section?

I need my pictures!!!

I disagree .. champcar needs more ovals The mix of Road, street, superspeedway and short ovals is what attracted me to chapcars years ago.

When CART went to TMS, the drivers organization requested/required that a pit lane wall had to be installed. LVMS doesn't have that wall either, is that really a big deal or was that just a feable attempt by the drivers to try and not make the race happen in the first place?

I really thought this would not happen, a Champ Car race at a SMI facility. Well OWRS has taken quite a risk here. There has never been a situation were Champ Car is undertaking an event where the IRL has been kicked out.
Time to start promoting this one really hard. If there is not a large percentage of the aluminum stands covered with butts, the IRL shills are going to have a field day.

I think it will look over the fencing. Get a paddock pass for pictures. Upper Terrace gives the cars that "slot car" look.

The interesting thing is that NASCAR hasn't objected... yet? Sharing the same track and date and costs? An UnFrance UnPenske thing to do.

The "shills" will point out the exodus of fans after the tuck race is over. It's bound to happen with a 9pm race start.

An article pointed out how Casinos were given tickets for $1 each in blocks of 5,000. So they had 60,000 for the truck race last year. Any word if it's the same thing this year?

NASCAR cannot object, since Bruton Smith's SMI owns Vegas. Rival ISC controlled by the France family would not have agreed.

Does anyone know what the weekend schedule will be regarding practice and qualifying for the two series? I’m assuming that with Champ Car being the added “undercard” so to speak, they will have to fit their schedule around Nascar’s.

Apparently Friday is all Champcar. Trucks will practice, qualify and race on Saturday. Champ Car will race after the trucks race.

I don't thinkk there will be 'undercard' status.

The race starts at 9:00PM, you are right it isn't "undercard" status, but it does start late.

400 mile race?
