This picture serves for the thousand words I need to express my contempt for the IRL.

Not bad, but the safer barrier kinda spoiled that crash. The Atlanta Fireball is still the standard all IRL pilots must aspire to.

Funny how some photographer just had a sneaking suspicion that if he kept Carpenter in the lens, eventually he was going to get one of those "moment of truth" shots most guys only dream about, isn't it?

Finally, the answer to the old Zen question:

If a crapwagon hits the SAFER barrier and nobody is there to see it, does it still burst into flames?

I thought Halley's comet wasn't due back until 2024.

Wall + Car = Oil Fire. Safer Barrier or not.

I remember hearing it, not sure but I do believe that is Mansell at Phoenix.

Shrapnel? What shrapnel?

Lemme see, Nigel walled Phoenix in 93 after spending a career as a cream-of-the-crop road racer and trying ovals for the first time. Despite his lack of oval experience, he won the big oval race in May -- and a series championship.

Special Ed on the other hand is just biding his time testing the car/wall/oil flammability flash point factor at various oval venues while waiting on that call from Sir Frank.

Good educational comparison. :)

Not important to the conversation, but Nigel did not win the big oval race in May. ;)

I've been to Milwaukee, and it seemed like a small oval to me. ;)

Nonetheless, good attempt, but full points cannot be awarded.

That's Nige injuring his back at Phoenix in '93. The story that was written was that the '93 Lola had a new longitudinal gearbox (like all IRL cars), replacing the transverse one from previous models (can't confirm this). The increase stiffness from the gearbox casing design in that orientation is much higher, and may have contributed to Nigel hurting his back for the 3rd time in his career. IRL solved this problem by using the 'attenuator' on the gearbox end.

If memory serves, Nige only won one street/road race in CART -- Surfer's, his first start. The rest of his wins were on ovals.

Yep, Nige' won a Milwaukee, Michigan, Louden and Nazareth and damn mear won Indy. Not bad for a road racing "specialist".

I'm anxiously waiting for Mr. Ed to win an IRL race and the WDC so Brickman can compare their fabulous talents again...

After your picture worth a "thousand words" of "contempt" I didn't think you would add anything else. ;)

I just thought the lucky step ***** crashing wasn't the most contemping picture I had seen. Because even the most talented crash.

Excellent product placement. Spectacular. And no possibility of improving on that one.

Safer barrier does a nice job as a giant grinding wheel. Wonder if the car still meets minimum length requirements? Or was he DQ'd to the back of the pack (didn't, of course, see the "race" so I have to assume that some other wanker must have crapped out prior to Mr. Ed)?

That other wanker would be the one and only AJ 4!

This is the Red Bull driver search in action? Ed gets a full sponsorship for flaming up his car while RHR is winning races?
