from bbc:

"But Interior Minister Angel Acebes later revealed that an Islamic tape had been found with detonators in a stolen van recovered near Madrid.

The van was found in the town of Alcala de Henares - where three of the four bombed trains originated. The other train passed through the town.

Mr Acebes said the tape - one of seven discovered in the van - contained verses of the Koran, in Arabic, relating to education."

What can anyone do about these scumbags? Because they are such a ragtag outfit it must be almost impossible to track them down. These people are very, very evil. My thoughts go out to the families and survivors.

"Scumbags" is a rather mild term for them, IMHO.

I was thinking "Family Forum" Lizzerd. Just finished watching the news on this tragedy and it's still unclear who was responsible. Attacking innocent people is for cowards.

I've been seeing it or hearing of the tragedy all day too, Russell. Whoever did these dastardly acts, I've heard some blame put upon Basque, and other sources Al-Queda, I agree with you, they are cowards.

I hope you didn't interpret the  as if I was mad at you for saying "scumbags".

N'ah, you're cool mate. You had 9/11, we had Bali and now there's Spain. The trouble I have is where do you find them? You can't go and invade their country because they don't have one, you can't get their supply chain, they are shallow cowards.

Years ago our Cricket team went to Sri Lanka and a bomb exploded outside their hotel. On another tour there they had the same situation. On a tour to Pakistan a bomb blew up a bus on the other side of the street to their hotel and the powers that be are going to fine the traveling countries if their teams refuse to tour. Now the hockey (Olympic qualifying) series is on in Spain and this horror unfolds. If you can't travel the World to play sport safely, well I worry for the human race.

Rant over.

My hope is that ETA had nothing to do with it and maybe they will quit their crap due to this.

Whomever these terrorists are, I completely fail to see their motivation. did 9/11 help their cause? Will killing a bunch of innocent people in Spain help their cause?

I don't see how. All I can figure is they are so ignorant and blinded by F'ed up religious teaching, they are after the dozen virgins waiting on the other side or something.

They want the moderate muslims to take up the cause. One billion strong.

Sort of makes sense if you look at it this way. Heck, nothing else makes sense.

It is not confirmed that it was al-Q that was behind this...but rather the ETA...

No one has been confirmed yet. But knowing ETA's history this is way beyond their history. In the last ten years their bombings have killed 800 people. Now they have an incredibly co-ordinated attack that kills 190+. 10 bombs going off at the same time. Way too co-ordinated for the ETA.

Looks like the people who want a religous war between the western world and Islam have got what they wanted.

Too bad. Especially for everyone that died in spain and is going to die in the future.

Put a sock in it and keep the politcal bs out of it. Terrorism has been around for decades. This has nothing to do with the current administration. Remember, Al-Quada tried to take out the World Trade Center during Clinton's watch.

Right, and the only way this goes away entirely is if the moderate Islamic community wants it to. No money, no support network and hostility of the moderates equals the end of the line for the terrorists. That's why relations with the moderates is critical. So far, not so good, but it's still the early innings.

I was recently thinking the only people to deal with them is for Islam itself to reject the ideas of wackos! there seems to be a civil war between the various facets of Islam at this moment. but then Christianity is not with its own conflicts

How does invading countries that had nothing to do with the train bombing, stop terrorism?

Asking isn't political BS. It's common sense. And common sense is the only thing dying faster than innocent people.

But don't be upset. The one thing I can guaranty you is that if you're in favor of killing more innocent people, you'll get what you want.

Since no one in America is listening to moderate Americans, I don't have much hope for moderates in the rest of the world.

In a way, the 911 attack and it's outcome was a victory for Al Qaeda. One of Osama's motivations for declaring war on the USA was to drive the US military out of SaudiArabia. He succeded in that.. most of the US military garrisoned in Saudi have left.

The 311 attack in Spain can also be considered a victory by Al Qaeda. AQ says Spain was attacked because Aznar's govt supported the military action in Iraq. The govt could have survived the fallout from the terrorist attack but they tried to play politics and blame it on ETA immediately after the attacks occured. Once word got out that it was AQ, the spaniards turned on their govt for trying to lie to them... the conservatives just got voted out of office in todays election.

MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- In a dramatic rebuff to the ruling conservative Popular Party, Spain's socialists have scored a stunning victory in national elections. (http://http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/03/14/spain.blasts.election/index.html)

But there is good news (from same article): "Three days after terror attacks killed 200 people in Madrid, socialist leader Jose-Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has vowed to make the defeat of terrorism his immediate priority."

Oh.. and before some wingnut condems me for saying AlQaeda is winning, that is not my intention. It's all about knowing how the enemy thinks and what motivates them, and just as important, knowing your own people...something the previous spanish govt miscalculated on by lying to their own people.

90%+ of the populus opposed the invasion

the center rights were pretty much going to win the elections until the bomb blasts

huge blow to the administration's claims of "intl support for pre-emptive action against terror"
