His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum (I'm not joking) is starting a new series, and has already put pen to paper with Lola to build a chassis for it.

He has the money, sounds like he has the determination, and what we have is another international open-wheel series.

We'll see where this lands, it could be a really good formula, but there's no doubt this is competiton for OWRS, especially for international venues.

IIRC, I heard this before about 3 or 4 months ago.....

Someone posted an artist's rendering of the Lola, and it was a major topic starter, to put it lightly. Major design style change.

If someone has the pic, please post it again.

Yeah, it's not new news, but the hard agreement is.

Unfortunately the only image/link I have is from AtlasF1, and it's a pay-for service (well worth the fee!):

A1 Grand Prix to be Launched Next Month
Friday February 20th, 2004

The new A1 Grand Prix series, a new Dubai-based motorsport venture with events worldwide, will be launched in Dubai on March 30, organisers said.

The championship, which will use cars built by Lola in Britain and powered by 3.5 litre Langford engines, will involve a minimum of 24 countries. Last month organisers placed an order with Lola for 30 identical cars, the prototype of which will be revealed at the launch.

The cars will have no electronic controls, with the emphasis on the driver's abilities, and the championship will have between nine and 18 races in a season. Organisers said the series will offer up to $2 million in prize money.

A1 Grand Prix series for Middle East
26-01-2004

Lola Cars International Ltd today confirmed the completion of a formal agreement between the company and A1 Grand Prix, a new winter single-seater series that has been founded by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum and businessmen, Brian Menell and Antonio Teixeira.
New cars will be developed for the A1 Grand Prix series that is set to begin in the winter of 2005 (pending FIA approval), involving a minimum of 24 countries. 30 single seater cars will be built for the new series and 3.5 litre engines will be developed by Northampton based Langford Performance Engineering. Doesn't sound like it's intended to directly compete with ChampCar or F1. Might be kinda nice to have some racing during the offseason.

It's not so much competition for fans, as they will be racing in the off-season (great news - hope they get a North American TV package!). :)

But if the South African promoter (for example) has the resources for one race, it's inevitably going to be a competition over who gets it.

that's fine...OWRS should concentrate on North America anyway.

My kids got a Hot Wheels made "McLaren" F1 car in a McDonald's Happy Meal @ 2 years ago--same car, different graphics.

I wonder what His Highness Anton Hulman Tony George the George thinks of this? "Dubai, is that in Kentucky"

Seriously, I give the Sheikh two years before he loses interest and moves on to the new sport de jour.

As long as it's on TV for me to watch... :) I don't care whose money is being spent! :)

The middle East? That's where I'd want to race if I were a driver... :saywhat:

I don't get some of the northern hemisphere logic going on here, 24 countries, but only 9- 18 races... :saywhat:

Maybe they going to stage the races on the borders of 2-3 countries, kill 2 birds with one stone!

That is some serious bling bling going on there.

Have you got stub axles ordered for the Escort yet Mappy?

Looks like Son of Crapwagon...... mated with Dan Gurney's Olsonite Eagle at Ontario circa 1974 (when they used the huge sideplates on the rear wing) I thought Lola was OB. Did they reopen to fleech this clown? Believe it when I see it, reeks of "Formula Lightning"

Schweeeeeeet!!!!!

On that note, some kid comes wailin' past me the other night with what was probably a passable ricer 10 years ago or such.

He was sporting the soup can exhaust tip and a very similar rear wing setup which either was dialed into crapwagon setting or really heavy, (or he had DNFIsher in the trunk), I swore he hit a bump and the front end lifted!

But, not being in the mindset, I did have a question. Would it not be better in the tireless search for bling bling to opt for the smaller rear wing and use the savings to purchase a 5 gal. pail of Bondo and cheese up the cavernous holes in the fender metal?

;)
