I remember Amon as being the fastest guy with the worst luck during the first couple of decades I followed F1. The race reports in R&T or Autocar would often include notes on Amon qualifying well and leading a race in one of those awful late 60s Ferrari V12s or early 70s Matra V12s and then going out with a mechanical failure. It must have sucked to be that fast and always pick the wrong equipment.
