"The decision to withdraw from NASCAR was not an easy one,'' Lynn Myers, general manager of Pontiac-GMC, said in a statement. "Consistent with GM efforts to focus its racing programs, Chevrolet will carry the NASCAR banner while Pontiac can now devote resources to developing future racing and marketing programs.''

Translation:
We saw what Toyota did to GM in the IRL, and we can't let that happen in NASCAR.

This doesn't surprise me, haven't they only won one race this year? (Craven at Talladega)

There hasn't been a real 'Pontiac' in a long time. It was like Plymouth to Chrysler.
