Indy Racing League driver Tony Renna has crashed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and his condition is still unknown, however it was a serious crash.

It happened Wednesday morning during private tire testing.

Apparently the car went airborne in the short shoot between turns three and four, hitting the railing.

The 26-year-old Renna had recently been introduced as a new member of the Chip Ganassi Racing Team, headquartered in Indianapolis.

During the 2003 Indianapolis 500 Renna qualified in the eighth position and finished seventh.

The reports at TF from those who have seen pictures of the scene on TV indicate that it appears his car got airborne, went through the catch fence, and impacted a spectator railing.

There have been multiple confirmations that he has lost his life, however officials are (or were) trying to notify family before making an official statement.

It's now been confirmed by multiple news sources, including local Indy media, and by Trackside Online - who are extremely careful about this type of news. Godspeed, Tony.:(

I'd also like to say that the word "crapwagon" and the little roll-on-the-floor-laughy emoticon are EXTREMELY inappropriate for this thread.

Well, I'd like to say calling the IRL an autoracing series is inappropriate. It's nothing more than a ghoulish sideshow run by an arrogant moron. Somehow Mario and Brack survived or it would be three fatalities in one year. Not to mention all the assorted non-lethal carnage. Geezus, just shut it down.

so if he went through the fencing would the car have landed on spectators?

The irl have been dodging bullets all season long. I was surprised it took until the last race to have a big one.

I'm very saddened by this news, and very disgusted. More unfortunate for Tony and his family is that unlike racing accidents, this one may have not had cameras rolling or witnesses to a possible failure in design etc. Engineers will know why this happened, but will we, or more importantly, the family really know why this happened? Please don't let Tony die in vain. Fix it or, better yet, end it!

He looked like he had a promising career ahead of him after his run at Indy this year, and then getting his ride with Ganassi. This is horrible. I hate news like this...

As I posted on the other thread...

I have no words... only grief.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tony's family, friends, team and the IRL community.

Now isn't the time for bashing or epithets... now is the time for the open-wheel community to come together in support of one of its own.

My thoughts go out to the Renna family.

But this is pure madness. Three airborne crashes in one year, leaving one driver seriously injured and lucky to be alive, and one gifted driver stolen from us.

How many more must die before someone puts an end to this???
