I remember seeing this car at a Can-Am race at Mosport in '83.

It was nicknamed the 'pontoon' car. The driver was in one sidepod while the engine was in the other and in between was one big wing. The concept sounded good but man was it slow. It retired when the bodywork flew off....

Flip a cat hull racing boat upside down, cut a hole for a cockpit, add suspension, flip the motors over and Wa La, a race car!!

Let us not forget that design innovation is what brought virtually every dominant racing machine its success. Sometimes, you just throw something against the wall and see if it sticks. This one, apparently, bounced back.

I wouldn't call it a 'true' GTP, FCY. That's a Lola T294 (I think) of about mid-70s vintage, with a fugly cockpit cover tacked onto it, to become the first cobbled GTP. IIRC, the first 'real' GTP was the Lola T600.

Technically, FCY is right since that was the first car entered as a GTP. It was an Alfa-powered Chevron B21. The interesting thing about the car is that the windshield is actually the rear glass from a Corvette.

Also, just think, if GTPs evolved from that, maybe there is hope for Daytona Prototypes. Actually, probably not. :(
