We had a surge go through the office around 4:00-4:15. A few computers restarted but nothing major. Anybody else have anything? I hear Cleveland is out. Nappy? Rosawendel? Toronto too. devilmaster? Check in when you get juice guys!

CNN says it is not terrorism.

I don't know how CNN would know that. I think that they said it was too early to say.

It's hit the whole North East. From the reports here everywhere from NJ all the way up to Ottawa have been hit. We had a brief outage here followed by about a 20 minute brown-out.

We just had another surge here about 3-4 minutes ago. Shut my computer down again.

Terrorism or not, those shots from the air of NYC and all the people walking home from work are all too reminiscent of 9/11.

Another good thing about living in Texas. We have our own grid. Something to do with us being an independant country prior to joining the Union and the treaty provisions.

Hopefully, things will get back to normal soon. I remember the last time this happened back in the 70's. Lots of looting is going to take place and watch out in next April....Baby BOOM on the way.

Why would it be the "T" word? It's supposedly a massive overload on the power grid from the heat. The grid went down like a line of dominoes unfortunately.

Nappy checking in from power outage cental.

About 4:15 or so my lights in my office flickered and about a minute later, out. My ussual 12 minute drive home took an hour. The road in front of my house is still bumper to bumper, which it has been for the last hours, and it never is.

Well at least I have a lot of ice frozen to keep the fridge cool.

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - An overload caused a massive power outage across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving much of New York, Detroit, Toronto and Ottawa without electricity

"We have no indication that there is any terrorism involved," said Bryan Lee, a spokesman for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington

The blackout was caused by a failure at a Manhattan power plant that destabilized the power grid as far as Canada, Lee said."

The news here is reporting that the most likely cause is the failure of the Niagra-Mohawk grid in NY state.

Man just when I thought I had gotten a good jab in, you two gang up and through a couple of right hooks and put me down for the count. I give up, I give up...I could probably come back with a little something but you would then remind me that jetdoc hails for here as well.

ya know, my isp is a great company.

With my dsl, i get 15 hours of dialup free a month. finally they got it back up and running, so while I sit, in the dark, listening to the radio, I work on a battery, through the phone line.

Report of massive factory fire in detroit near zug island. don't know if its related.

I know how pitiful it can get.

When my idiot neighbor knocked out our street in a tree killing attempt a few weeks back I found myself sitting in the garage beating on my laptop keyboard by the light of a 'skeeter candle.

POWER UP!!!!! :D

Not all parts of Ontario have juice, my cable is still biffed, but at least dialup works.

Anyone remember the same deal in November of '65? I was but a wee lad then, hardly weaned (sameol, sameol' :D) they blamed that deal on everything from UFO's to Sasquatch to paper plugging his guitar in and overloading the power grid.

Thing is, I have heard/read many "experts" that have claimed since that '65 was an aberration and would NEVER be repeated.

Don't worry too much about RaceChic. There are lots of homeless people in the GTA she could round up for a chat. ;)

Sorry guys, but I'm back now. :p Power went out at 4:10 while I was on the highway, and started flickering back on around 4 AM. I didn't have my watch on me since my dad needed it for the alarm, but my cable box kept turning on and off, but stayed on long enough for the clock to set. Finally, full power returned at 4:26 AM, which was about perfect timing. My alarm clock (non-digital) ended up not having to be reset!

Very unusual experience, I guess now I know what its like to live in California. It was actually really cool to see everyone outside last evening, there were hot girls everywhere! But once it got pitch black, it was spooky as hell to drive on all these major streets, and see nothing but pitch black and some taillights.

Local Internet Perusing Company vows to 'get back at it' after 22 hour hiatus.

No air? Breathe easy. Gas gouging? Drop in the tank.

No internet? Now we have a problem.

Its been that way for a local 'Internet Perusing Company' called Devilmaster Software Inc. The major blackout that affected over 50 million people in the US and Canada, has hit many companies, including DSI, which is wholly owned by local fixture, Steve Farfignewton. [editor's note Last name changed to protect those who actually know him, those poor people]

DSI, which has many divisions, were all affected by the down time, which spanned 22 hours in this area. "All of our divisons were disrupted to some degree. Our average daily forum posting rate went down faster than MPH's stock because of the power loss." Steve said. "Our multimedia download dept was stuck with dialup service throughout the night, which was painful for them, as they were forced to listen to country music, which the dept was contracted by some barrel racer in toronto to download."

DSI plans to work extra hard to catch up, according to Steve. "Our Porn viewing dept, which was in a tight battle with an Ohio firm, Warlock! Perversions LLC, will have to work extra hard and long to stay up with the Joneses. The good part of this, our dept estimates that during the 22 hour downtime, 48 million new photos have become available to the internet."

Its chatting service, one of its largest divisions, was able to survive the blackout, albiet at a reduced rate, thanks to laptops, dialup services and a single car lighter to socket transformer. "We're not sure how often we had to recharge, but when major stores re-open, we'll need some car batteries."

Now that power is back up, Steve looks forward to getting his business back up to full capacity. "It will take some time. We've been up and running for so long, nobody really remembers how to turn on the computer in the first place. Each department is looking for manuals, but most of our staff are male, and therefore, 'what manual' was the first thing that department heads told me. We found an old videotape on how to start a computer, but since we went dvd a long time ago, we need to hook up a VCR again. Luckily, one of my department heads has a videotape on how to set up and connect a VCR. They're working on that right now......."

My power was off until 7am this morning, though we did not lose water like many sections of greater cleveland. Overall, I enjoyed the relative peace and the beautiful view of the starts, but my oh my haven't talked to my wife that much in years!

On a funny note, I pitty my clients. The heat and humidity killed my attempts to sleep last night and damn am I grumpy with no sleep!

OK Sean, you live in Parma, how did you start it?

Some how it does not surprise me that First Energy would be the utility that set it off. After the Davis Besse nuclear power plant fiasco (see below) I have concluded that they are run top to bottem by a bunch of Homer Simpsons.
