If you've ever heard of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice', you know the head coach.

First Neilson, now Brooks. Damn.

Major bummer. One of my greatest sports memories is sitting in my dorm room watching the US team kick butt in 1980

For us in Minnesota, this is a very sad night.

I played hockey (badly) when younger and loved watching Herb coach the Gophers, when he became the Olympic head coach it was huge.

He assembled a team of many upper midwest college hockey kids and molded them into giant killers.

The win again Russia and then winning the Gold against Finland were defining moments in my life.

Herb had many great quotes, but to this day my favorite is:

"You were born to be a player, you were meant to be here, this moment is yours"

Tonight the TV's in Minnesota and many other places will be replaying that spectacular moment when Al Michaels said "Do you believe in miracles ? Yes !!!"

And I will cry again.

We'll miss you Herb.

This is the most bizarre news. My husband and I, just last evening, were watching the HBO special about the 1980 hockey game. And I said, "What's that coach doing nowadays?" and now this......:(

How sad. :(

The Minneapolis Star Tribune had many tribute articles to Herb today. They can be found here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/503/4036594.html

He was a legend here in Minnesota, and he will be missed.
