So, What happens to HP? Did they decide to stop sponsoring, or is AB putting up that much more money?

Or was HP only fulfilling Compaq's obligations? If so, why a midseason switch?

HP isn't going anywhere. From ESPN and AP (http://espn.go.com/rpm/f1/2003/0716/1581480.html) ...

In becoming one of Williams' three main sponsors, Budweiser must amend their distinctive red and white color scheme to fit in with the predominantly blue and white traditional colors of the Williams cars.

"One thing we learned from the start is it's a blue and white car and we respected that tradition,'' Ponturo said. "We use the red paint scheme very dramatically in the U.S. ... so this is going to be a little different from what people have expected.''

The partnership between Budweiser and Williams can ultimately help Formula One expand its interest in North America.

In looking for F1 teams to sponsor, Budweiser smartly chose Williams, which already has U.S-based primary sponsor Hewlett-Packard. HP is the only current F1 sponsor to advertise in America with commercials featuring Schumacher and Montoya.

Compaq Europe has sponsored BMW vehicles for many years prior to the F1 sponsorship.

HP has sponsored Ford/Jag teams for many years. Instead of one big sponsorship role they had numerous associates (Rahal, Stewart/Jaguar, Jordan)

So yes the Williams sponsorship was Compaq's obligation that was part of the merger.

I don't know if the HP sponsorship will go away from Williams, however, I know that HP is listed as a "principle" sponsor and I haven't seen that verbage used with the Bud sponsor deal. So, I am just speculating that the Bud deal is equivalant to the FedEx sponsorship and not the principle sponsor like HP or BMW.

Thanks, I guess I inferred that Bud was becoming THE primary sponsor. I just re-read the article and it does not mention anything towards them being the primary sponsor. OOPS! :gomer:

I would not be surprised to see some big old red patches on the drivers' suits as well.

I'm not talking about volume. I'm talking about taste. Bud ain't a real beer. Bud is to beer what NAPCAR is to motor racing. What white zin is to a fine chardonnais. What NJ Devils hockey is to Maple Leaf's hockey.

You get the idea. :)
