We have to do ballistic testing. We plan to fire a weighted wheel assembly like you see in the FIA, the whole assembly, but we also plan to do ballistic tests. We?re firing a one-kilogram piece of aluminum at a 220 mph. These materials, the design criteria and the windscreen material, have all passed these sort of tests in the past.

Ballistic testing is where the previous windscreen failed. So this might not be the end result. Kind of surprising there would be no ballistic testing previous to the announcement. Isn’t that the whole point of this?

Agreed. It might be rediculously expensive, but i'd love to hear that they tried transparent aluminum on this.... Mostly because that's what one aspect of racing was about for a long time...

In my opinion (and many others, it seems), it looks more in proportion to the rest of the car from the side view, and less so from the front. I think the same applies to the road course and superspeedway cars -- the screen stands out less in road course trim.

It's definitely going to take some getting used to.

Ed, maybe my recall isn't accurate but wasn't the original reason why a halo type device could not be used was that the current chassis design wouldn't allow for mounting it securely. If I am correct, how has that changed?

To be perfectly honest, I don't know how the mounting of the aeroscreen differs from what they would have used for the halo.

It's removable, but as I understand it the process takes about 15 minutes. Extraction plans are not something that have been discussed around me. I'm sure the topic has come up, I just haven't been involved in it.

Per Tino Belli on the Pruett podcast, the FIA spec halo (as used in F2, F3, Super Formula) cannot be properly retrofitted to the IR/DW-12 monocoque.

The Red Bull Advanced Technologies device for Indycar does include its own bespoke "halo" like structure which actually exceeds the FIA spec halo's load limits.

I wish Justin Wilson had one of these, and Jeff Krosnoff, and many others that would still be with us today if they had been around. Personally, I think in the future they will look at the current cars without the Aeroscreen like we look at old roadsters without roll hoops, just stupid.

Is it the sexiest looking thing, no. But that is worth someone's life, right. And if they ever get around to actually designing a new car tub, they can incorporate it a bit better and hopefully improve on this.

Kind of funny, they were talking plexiglass canopy with explosive bolts. I think they did a better job with the Aeroscreen.

Ya know, I looked at my posts 12 years ago in that thread and I was doubter. I was wrong. There was a middle ground they are trying to cultivate in the name of safety and I like it.

However, as macabre as it sounds, I also thought about those past accidents, HD.

Would it have saved Justin? probably. It probably would have been better results for Massa and DaMatta. It might have even saved Henry Surtees a few years ago and even Senna and someone like Tom Pryce instead of getting hit by that fire extinguisher.

Unfortunately, I have serious doubts about a halo/windscreen saving Krosnoff, or Moore or Wheldon. Those accidents were just too violent, (krosnoff's tub was ripped apart leaving him exposed.)

I honestly don't care if the new setup looks like s**t on a stick, but that drivers can see properly through it, and it helps to protect lives. :thumbup:
