claiming the crowds at Indianapolis are now back to what they were pre-split. Anyone got any photos from Pole Day or the '94 500 online they can aim me at?

For the entire Month O' May: Unpossible, a huge grandstand was removed on entry into TS, Tower Terrace was reconfigured for the F1 garages, used to be small bleachers on inside of T1 and T4 that were removed for the road course. IMS has less permanent seating today than 20 years ago, how much is purely speculation. Even if all permanent seats were filled race day would be less today. The rest of the month 23 years ago was actually 2 plus weeks with huge weekend crowds and daily crowds that would put today's qualification crowds to shame. Now it is just the previous weekend plus carb day. Carb day is bigger but includes a concert.

I think he's thinking the 500 attendance is back to basically full stands. Basically the fight started when I described the current Crapwagon as the homeliest open wheel car ever. Another guy agreed and I responded that it's been that way since '95. Said poster complained the racing has been good and they've recovered their fan base, but I think he's considering full seats as the 500 as the litmus test. It's not worth getting into a pissing match. I was hoping to put up a pic of Pole Day and ask him to show me this year's attendance. That should be 'nuff said.

In 1995 you had to have your renewal in one week after the race to get tickets for the next year. This year's race has yet to be announced as sold out. I read a post at Trackforum today that said blocks of 20 tickets are still available in most sections.

Seriously, not worth your time to document the FAIL. Gomers gonna be gomers. Let 'em have their fantasy. :tony:

Still blocks of 20 available all over the place including prime stands.

Good job, Tony. :tony:

Back in the mid 90's I had to go to the track for work. I was working on a movie for Ford, we were filming qualifying and interviewing the Ford drivers etc. I couldn't wait to get out of there. There were over 500,000 fans making it very hard to work even with the passes from hell that got us anywhere we needed to go. I just remember it being a mad house.

I had forgotten some stands were removed but "the guy" was probably referring to last year (100th) when it was sold out.

Meant T3

These were lousy seats and hadn't been full for years but there were several thousand. You can see the bare concrete in the photo where they once stood. They were basically an extension of the stands that remain.

I believe some seating was also lost due to making some of the paddock penthouse ADA compliant.

But gomers will believe anything (obviously) so I'm sure if someone wants to think the crowd is back, none of this matters.

I really want the 500 to bounce back but butt ugly spec cars just won't do it. The Little 500 at Anderson Speedway has a bigger entry list at the moment and I believe it IS sold out.

correct me if I'm wrong, but in '94 didn't they have four different engines, two different tires, and at least three different chassis?

And one of those things is that I will not click on any link with the words "track forum" in it. :p

The aluminum people need somewhere to sit. Where else would they put their aluminum spouses and aluminum children?

Isn't that going the wrong way...?

For the oval race, yes. For the roadcourse race, no.

I had on Saturday's race and it looked like there were a decent enough amount of people in the turns and in the infield, but most of the straightaway grandstands were empty.
