60! That in unbelievably old for a Gorilla. That has to be something like 130 in human years. The Cleveland Zoo lost a 32 year old one just 3 or 4 days ago.

She was, in a word, human. The oldest living lowland gorilla in captivity. Born by 'accident' as the then zoo keeper setup a 'date night', which resulted in conception. Unheard of at the time. Colo was abandoned by her mother, and nursed by the Cbus Zoo staff. She celebrated #60 last month, and the out pouring of well wishes from various 'stars' on Twitter, etc. was simply amazing. Having worked at the Cbus Zoo previously, this hits hard. :(

I went to that zoo about 4 years ago. I will have to look through my pictures.

The reason I went there is Columbus has a group of the Great Ape that most people are not familiar with and who are not depicted in the Planet of the Apes, Bonobos (it just so happens Cinci and Milwaukee have some as well). It was great to watch them, the Orang and Gorillas (I don't recall if they had Chimps as well, but they must have).

You name it, the Cbus Zoo has them. I may be biased, but I've been to the SD Zoo and National Zoo...Cbus is the best zoo in the world. :) I went to HS with Jack's daughter Kathaleen, and met Jungle Jack many a time. Great, great ambassador for animal conservation and protection. If you have the chance, head down 77 to The Wilds.
