From what I read, you're pretty far from this but check in OK?

The 7.5 earthquake, which hit the Kaikoura region in the South Island, early this morning, has caused extensive damage to the road and rail services for this region. Currently all road and rail services between Christchurch and Picton, via Kakoura, are impassable and communications are difficult. It is business as usual for Christchurch city's tourism operators following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake centered near Hanmer.
Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Vic Allen says the airport, hotels, car and campervan hire companies, conference and meeting venues and visitor attractions in Christchurch are all operating as normal. Damage in the Christchurch CBD appears to be minimal, although building assessments are still being carried out.

Good thoughts for the Kiwis. :)

The report said the ground shook for 2-3 minutes.
No thank you.

All good thanks Gal. We were in Dunedin and although there was an evacuation for some family members there we were in a high place so didn't know about the quake until 7am.

We have just watched the national news and the damage is widespread and the infrastructure has really taken a beating. They are talking months to reopen SH1 and billions in costs. Two lives lost but given the severity once again I think we got away lightly.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/ has some good coverage.

I was going to post a cheeky title "If any of you Americans are thinking of moving Downunder" but having learnt of loss of life and how much damage there has been it would have been in bad taste. Do you know three families in Christchurch arrived back from their evacuations to find their homes ransacked and most of their possesions had been stolen. The Boss here won't let me express my true feelings about those scumbags. *family filter* in place.

Stay safe, Rusty.

Seems like this story is going viral.

The cow picture reminded me of this one from the 1989 quake in San Francisco.

The Cypress Structure was an elevated double-decker freeway through Oakland. It collapsed during the quake, except for this one section with a tractor trailer on it. Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

It would be easier to just drop a grill off up there.

I know sweetie, I know. I wish I still had the time to post here like I used to but seem to have so much going on at the mo.

I think the damage from this quake will take some sorting. There is some talk on not going through official channels to get work done as SH1 and the rail link are vital to the Rest of the South Island. Desperate times = desperate measures.

Rusty.

The aerial video footage on saw on NBC Nightly tonight showed a lot more than three cows stranded.

Be well Rusty. :)

Glad to know you're ok mate. You guys are having a pretty bad run on the Shaky Isles atm. This side of the Tasman is much more stable!

Yes, except for your cricket team.

Seriously though, thanks mate. We have been so lucky in the Lower South Island but further up the country it has been a bit rough. One of the most pressing things was to try and get the 1100 tourists out of Kaikoura. I think we only have three military helicopters. :D

Do they buzz hotels with hot chicks like the Aussies did for the CART race years ago? :gomer:

Picking not. I do have some pics of said "girls" but I can't post them here. My son wanted them for "reference " Not sure what that means. 😇 His mother wasn't altogether happy at the time but she was outnumbered by the HUGE crowds that were there. Man I miss those days. Fast cars, plenty of on and off track moments, no earthquakes. Sigh.

On a side note the cows are doing fine. :D
