Turkey's military blowing stuff up in the capital city of Ankara?

Hell, why not?

IMHO, this Yugoslavia all over again. And I have roots going back to Hungo/Slavic. :(

It would be better if the military had Erdogan in custody. If he's still free, there will be a counterstrike.

Dang. Tanks in the street and at the airport.

I'm guessing they are gonna go Tito on his ass, and his hours are numbered. Incirlik is critical for us and Europe/Mideast.

Reports are Erdogan is on a plane headed to London after Germany told him to get lost. But, who knows if that's true.

Now the people are in the street. Not good.

It's called Democracy, eh? :saywhat: And this with the parental units heading off on a cruise to Scandy next week. :irked:

Looks like the military wasn't willing to kill civilians. CNN showed a tank crew refuse to fire into a crowd of unarmed protestors. Good for them, but also a bad way to stage a coup.

Erdogan is back in the country, but so far he's stuck on the wrong side of Bosporus.
East and West Turkey?

Saw cell videos on Fox News of helicopters firing rounds into crowds. :( Could be like TSUN...directional Turkey? :saywhat: Balkans redux. :(

Whether this was an real honest to God coup attempt or something brewed up by Erdogan, he's using it to eliminate opposition and consolidate power.

Now he's demanding that we "Surrender Dorothy."

I did not know the U.S. kept nuclear weapons there. I thought one result of the Cuban Missile Crisis was to remove nukes from Turkey.

Turkey is a NATO ally, but I wouldn't trust them.

IMHO, dirty little secrets. :\

Some abbreviated history on Turks...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Turkey

They basically became part of NATO due to the Soviet expansion...as did Iran (not NATO, but an ally) and the Saudis. I know a bit more about that region due to family roots. I wept over the Yugo breakup in the '90s. :(

I was hoping the coup would be successful, even though I generally oppose the overthrow of democratically elected governments. Erdogan is a loose cannon and represents a significant threat to stability in the world. I wish that Turkey were not in NATO with him in control, because I am afraid he will try to invoke Article 5 for something relatively trivial or after he shoots down another Russian plane. Europe was comfortable with Turkey in NATO when it was secular, but I don't think the support is there for Turkey's version of Franco or Mussolini.

I believe that whenever Turkey started to get too religious, that the military would step in, straighten everything out, and they would continue on their secular way. Sometimes bloodless.

Didn't stick this time around, which is NOT good news...

I heard an analyst on CNN say the only thing worse than a coup was a failed coup. Now Erdogan has the opportunity to purge dissent from his administration.

The purge has been happening for months now, this is just speeding it up.

He just arrested 2700 judges. Doubt any of them had anything to do with the coup.

Let's not forget Erdogan's assault on the free press or his forcing the resignation of his once right hand man Davutoglu because he dared to question Erdogan on certain things happening in the country.

They've now fired over 15,000 people from schools and universities for supposed involvement in the coup. Place is spinning back into the dark ages quickly.

Horrific news for Turkey. So sad. It reminds me of the cultural revolution.
